Introductory Biography on William Walker Atkinson

As someone who has had an interest in the works of Yogi Ramacharaka (William Walker Atkinson) I highly recommend this book for the lengthy biographical introduction. Mr. Deslippe has evidently done much research into this elusive pioneer of the early New Thought movement. It is my understanding that he is currently at work on a full biography. I encourage anyone with an interest to purchase this book to support his continued work. The book also has an unpublished book included as well. Well worth the cost if any of the three parts were sold separately: Biographical Introduction, The Kybalion or The Seven Cosmic Laws. Thank you Philip this is a very much appreciated work.

The Kykbalion conquers fear, religion

This is required reading for any religious adherent across faiths. Way too much time is spent debating the merits of which religion is authentic discourse for humanity. Better time is spent understanding how we all come under the auspices of a grand scale universe, governed by Divine Law. That the religious community for centuries fails miserably at balancing scriptural disagreement, leaving only room for who is right or wrong, is the best reason to deliberate a very different discourse and direction. The Kybalion is a clarification of gravity, polarity, rhythm, vibration - phenomenon that no 'believer' escapes. This book defines a profound space core to the human experience regardless of faith and place. The fool continues to grapple in darkness for an exit from the cul-de-sac of religious culture and tradition, without success. While this book is not religion, what it does provide is a baseline understanding of inescapable laws that govern our experience whether realized, or ignored, but nonetheless effervescent and present in our lived experiences. Read this book and become a better servant to us all. The Kybalion is not religion but offers something one can believe in. The Divine Law from THE ALL holds us in a protection and that understanding will illuminate the faith walk, and provide reason and hope we are all connected and destined to learn better how to build our communities as One.

Simply the best ... worth 10 stars!

I've owned and read a number of books on Photoshop over the past 10 years. Many of these were simple introductions to the Photoshop interface. Many were 'cook books' that provided step-by-step instructions for a few special tasks, like retouching or color balancing. Only a few really covered Photoshop in a comprehensive way or in the way a professional photographer would need. And by this, I mean approaches that covered all steps from moving images off the camera/memory card, archiving and backup, and non-destructive editing. (They are NOT introductions to photography; you are expected to now how to operate your camera!)

Martin Evening writes the best books on Photoshop and Lightroom. They cover all aspects of the software. He is a professional photographer with many awards to his credit. His books are comprehensive in all ways that a photographer needs. And because of this they are in fact 'substantial' books; big, thick, heavy books. However, the writing is superb. When he give detailed step-by-step instruction, they are clear and well illustrated. Sometimes this goes well beyond my needs as a nature photographer. Martin does a lot of fashion work, so extracting hair details from an image so it can be pasted onto a different background gets detailed coverage. Such chapters are easy to skip, though, but if there's any chance you might need it, it's there. So I'm simply saying that you won't outgrow one of Martin's books.

They are typically a bit pricier than some, too. However, they are in full color throughout, printed on high quality coated papers, and screen shots big enough to actually see what the author is talking about. (Some Photoshop books have color images only in a central set of coated pages, some in fact only black and white! Books by some really good authors have incredibly small screen shots where illustration just don't work. Often screen shots covering topics like sharpening or noise removal just do not work.)

Martin has an earlier 'big book' on Lightroom. This particular books covers the Develop module almost exclusively. Through a series of editing sessions he covers all of the tools in this module in detail. And because the book is relatively new, it has all the latest features as well. And I will emphasize that as Adobe pumps out updates, Martin adds free material covering these new features to the book's web site. (He has done this for all his books, by the way.) Right now there are 8 videos that accompany this book.

I also note that Martin's Lightroom books now take an approach that acknowledges that Lightroom is part of the Adobe CC Photographer licensing option that includes Lightroom, Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop. This book clearly shows how some tasks are best approached by moving some images into Photoshop for editing, then saving back to Lightroom.

And it also means that all of the tools in the Lightroom Develop module covered by this book are fully applicable to Adobe Camera Raw. Yes the user interface is somewhat different between LR and ACR, yet the underlying pixel engine is the same. But the combination of ACR and smart objects in Photoshop is the cornerstone of a non-destructive work flow. So if you participate in the Adobe Photography license apps, and especially if you primarily use Lightroom, this book is another excellent addition to Martin Evening's book series. And also highly recommended even if you primarily use the Bridge/ACR/Photoshop workflow!

Adventures in Lightroom

Lightroom instruction books aimed at beginners usually explain how the sliders change an image, but seldom try to explain how moving the sliders can make art, or at least artful works. Perhaps that's appropriate since learning what the sliders do is a task in itself, without having to think of art.

In this book, Martin Evening goes to the next step, which is to take a number of images, and show you how he has used the various Lightroom controls on them to make them more artful. Along the way, he offers additional advice on how to shoot particular types of images. The chapters are organized functionally, rather just following the order presented in Lightroom, and the emphasis is on the use of the develop module. There are chapters on, among others, adjusting tone and color, recomposing existing images, and black and white conversions. There are what might be called tutorials, where the author shows you an image he started with, explains the changes he made in Lightroom, and occasionally Photoshop, with screen captures of various menus and the modified images, and the ultimate final version.

Evening assumes some familiarity with Lightroom and Photoshop and often doesn't provide a lot of detail on the tool or menu he is using so if one is not familiar with the software, one can easily become lost. In fact, if you want to learn Lightroom and Photoshop, this is not the book for you.

The information is pitched on a variety of levels. On the one hand, the instruction on the spot removal tool is rather basic. On the other hand, his solution for removing street hardware by combining two images shot a few feet apart was something I had never encountered before, although it made absolute sense.

Although there are no online images to download and manipulate along with the author, there are videos that repeat and reinforce some of the tutorials in the text.

Occasionally some explanations of technical topics required a second or third reading to understand, but this was more because of complexity. Generally, Evening's writing is clear and accessible.

To create an artful image, one must examine the original capture and decide how one wants it to look in its final form. If the photographer does that, then it may be a matter of simply applying the correct tools to reach that goal. It's not always apparent what those tools are, but I suspect Evening can help the photographer see more of those tools. He doesn't teach one how to analyze the basic image as such, but one can infer his process of analysis from what he does, and that can be quite valuable.

Once a user develops a good familiarity with Lightroom and Photoshop, it hard to say how to develop more advanced skills. Evening presents many good ideas and tools that will probably help someone who understands the basics of Lightroom and Photoshop gain those skills.

Authority, Name, Foreword, Credential?

Quick service.
Though, I have second guessed this purchase. It has no forward. No translation tips. No evidence of credential or authoritative backing in regards to the content of this text. This is a huge concern. Who translated? All I know is it was published by Simon and Brown. This is one of the most important pieces of literature and ancient Chinese text, that needs some kind of discussion by anyone.
Good thing to consider.

If you are even considering getting into Twitter, get this book!

I started reading this book and almost immediately started saying things like, "I didn't know that", or "Well, that makes sense, why didn't I think of that?", or even a few versions of "Huh?". The book isn't written over my head, nor is it under my ability. Let me give you a better idea. I'm no genius. I frequently misspell frequently misspelled words. I'm no slouch either. I'm proud of the fact that I essentially taught myself much of what I needed to know in order to pass the tests that helped get me in a classroom. I guess I'm average.

But in being average, I feel that I'm like a lot of people out there. I use Twitter, but probably not to the full potential. I have a blog, but I'm sure I could do more with it. Just like a lot of other people out there. Given that, I feel uniquely qualified to tear into this book and give it a good once-over.

I think this book is essential for those who want to use Twitter for more than telling us what you are making for dinner. When I talk to young people, many want to start some sort of business. That's great, and for those people I suggest finding ways to use Twitter to their best advantage. The Definitive Twitter Guide should be your first stop.

This book is extremely well written, to the point that it could hold my attention long enough for me to read it, start following it, and get up here and write a bunch of words about it. If you are like me, young enough to use Twitter but old enough to be slightly intimidated by the tech, Shannon makes the information accessible.

The PF guy in me wants to leave it at "buy this book", but the teacher in me feels the need to jump in as well. Any of my students will tell you that I rarely give "A's". This is one of those times.

A few months ago, I dragged my mother (a woman in her late 60s) onto Facebook. She has a hard time getting used to it. In fact, she'd like to delete her account but she doesn't know how. Unlike my mom, businesses need to use social media to build relationships, engage with potential customers, and promote themselves. But businesses, like my mother, often don't understand how to use social media tools--like Twitter. This is where Shannon Evans' book, The Definitive Twitter Guide: Making Tweets Work for Your Business, is most valuable. This book will help not only businesses fully understand and use Twitter's potential but also individual Twitter newbies.

I should first provide a bit of context for my review. I've been on Twitter for two years. I've found it to be a wonderful tool for networking, making friends, and keeping up with the latest news (I love to be the first one to know things--just ask my hub). However. Getting on Twitter and figuring things out can be a daunting and time-consuming experience. This book provides both a history of the social media platform and an instruction manual for using it. First and foremost, Evans emphasizes that Twitter enables relationships and can aid your business only as much as you commit to building relationships via tweets.

Evans starts with the simple premise of twitter and builds on it. At the beginning of each chapter you get the "dummies" version of a concept related to tweeting and by the end of it you've got a map for advanced and streamlined twitter use. While her writing voice is authoritative, Evans explains things in layman's terms. This is a quick read and I love how the book demystifies social media without a lot of social media jargon. In some parts, Evans is downright funny (like when she calls spammers "carnies" on page 73). The organization and graphics in this book are great, serving to demystify the ins and outs of tweeting and advanced twitter use. While the title suggests that her audience consists of those wanting to learn more about Twitter for business purposes, Evans' book would be great for anyone looking to improve the quality of their tweets and the depth of their personal/professional networks.

The book has two problems and they have more to do with the genre than with the actual text. The 'real-life' examples of Twitter success in business and non-profits are really just excerpts rather than case studies. I wanted extended examples but then I'm a sucker for narrative (and that's probably why I wanted more). Newbie twitter users will be glad about Evans' judicious use of examples and the attention she gives instead to the hows and whys of tweeting. Secondly, the nature of this genre (social media instruction) threatens the long-term value of this book. Technology evolves so rapidly these days that, while I can't predict that Twitter will be passe in the next few years, some of these third party clients listed in the book might be. This kind of book loses cache after the second year or so because of the changing nature of social media. Still, if you want to learn how to use twitter or if you want to take your tweeting to the next level, this is a great book. I've been tweeting for over two years and still found a lot of useful information to hone my tweets. For example, I love the DM-ing tips on page 77 and also I realized I'm sometimes guilty of those "me, me, me!" tweets she cites as poor practice. Chapter 9 outlines ways to measure how tweeting can affect a business so I intend to use that info to gauge how tweeting affects my blog's traffic. Bottom line: newbie tweeps will benefit *greatly* by using this book. Experienced tweeps will enjoy Evans' book and learn some tricks they didn't know before.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.

Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its 10th edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.

Dr. Marieb has given generously to colleges both near and far to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series.

When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

Patricia Brady Wilhelm received her Ph.D. in biological and medical sciences from Brown University and is currently Professor and Chair of Science at Johnson & Wales University, Providence RI. She has taught human anatomy at Brown University, Rhode Island College, Community College of Rhode Island, and currently at the Center for Physician Assistant Studies at Johnson & Wales University.

Dr. Wilhelm’s commitment to teaching has been recognized throughout her career. In 1991 she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching from Brown University and in 2011 the Teaching Excellence Award from the Community College of Rhode Island. Dr. Wilhelm’s embraces innovation in the classroom and laboratory, incorporating Project Based Learning, POGIL activities, cooperative team-based dissection and other active learning strategies into her courses. The driving factor behind these innovations is the desire to aid student learning by making course materials accessible and to make the study of anatomy an active and interactive process. Dr. Wilhelm has shared her tools, techniques, experience, and enthusiasm for student success through professional presentations at national and regional meetings, including those of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the New England Biology Association of Two Year Colleges (NEBATYC), and Strategies to Success Conferences.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Wilhelm contributes to the development and use of multimedia course tools for human anatomy instruction, is a contributing author and reviewer for a number of anatomy and physiology publications, and is a reviewer for Anatomical Sciences Education. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the American Association of Anatomists (AAA), and the PULSE (Partnership for Undergraduate Life Science Education) Community.

Jon Mallatt earned his Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Chicago. Dr. Mallatt is currently an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Washington State University, where he has been teaching human anatomy to undergraduates of all backgrounds for 24 years. He is also a member of the department of Basic Medical Sciences, where he teaches courses in Histology and Anatomy of the Trunk in the WWAMI Medical Program. WWAMI honored him with their "Excellence in Teaching Award" in 1992, 1993, 1995, and 2000. Additionally Dr. Mallatt holds a position as adjunct Associate Professor in the department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington. His particular areas of expertise in the study of anatomy are histology, comparative anatomy, and anatomical drawing, although his research now focuses on the origin of vertebrate animals and molecular phylogeny. Dr. Mallatt is an accomplished researcher with 39 publications in the fields of anatomy and molecular phylogeny to his credit.

Excellent Instructional Manual for learning Human Anatomy

Don't let someones review of the CONDITION of her book deter you from the QUALITY of the CONTENT of this book. Great graphics, methodically builds concept upon concept, easy to understand. The lab book is an excellent tool, I copied pages out of the lab book to practice and practice memorizing structures. Highly recommend and the PAL dvd is a FANTASTIC tool.

Excellent Textbook

This textbook is incredible. The pictures and graphics are fantastic. There are several gorgeous, full-color spreads that were incredibly helpful in the lab section of my class. The text is well-written and easy to read, not dry in the slightest. I liked the organization of the textbook as well. Compounding information allowed me to continue to build my knowledge of human anatomy. I used this textbook for an upper-level biology class and actually enjoyed opening it. The price is also not bad, considering how much other science textbooks cost.

Overall, this textbook was great. I actually feel like I learned a lot by reading it. The pictures were very helpful in both lab and lecture.

So how do I know so much?
I qualified as an ADI in 1973 and started my own school in Sheffield, which I built up from one car to one of the largest, most respected and most profitable schools on South Yorkshire. Mechanics explained

I actually got my driver's licence just before I bought this book. I want to prove my driving silks. Nobody explained the mechanics behind the gear changing before. This book did. I think I have better understanding of the cars after reading this book. I also emailed the author for some questions and he immediately replied me with explanation.
