John Reumann is Ministerium of Pennsylvania Professor of New Testament and Greek, emeritus, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, where he taught for some fifty years. He has studied and written on Philippians for over thirty years.

This tome is a work of incredible scholarship by a brilliant Scripture scholar. It should be considered THE standard reference on the New Testament letter by Paul of Tarsus. If anyone wants to focus on Philippians in their study of Pauline theology, this is the must-have book in your library. That said, it is written at the graduate studies level and should not be considered an introductory level book. Every library in a seminary or graduate school of theology should have this book on its shelves.

Holmes and Watson On the Case...For Younger Readers!

The Graphic Planet version of history's most famous detective duo investigate a seemingly open-and-shut case of murder most foul in this 2010 Magic Wagon release, part of their 'Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.' Though I've enjoyed other titles in the series, adapter Vincent Goodwin has taken major liberties with this particular tale, and I think he's done a disservice to the original.

Claiming he was framed for the murder of Jonas Oldacre, attorney John Hector McFarlane asks for Holmes' help. Lestrade & Co. arrive and arrest McFarlane. H&W investigate and eventually unravel the case, uncovering a sinister plot by Oldacre himself.

For reasons unknown, Vincent dropped a major plot element - Oldacre's coldblooded murder of an innocent tramp - from the story. This omission makes Oldacre's deeds seem not more than a bad practical joke. I realize these editions are intended for younger readers but doing such a major rewrite is wrong.

In the words of Queen Victoria: "We are not amused."

The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, Goodwin

This is the “Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, similar to the old “Classics Comics” from around 1950. It has a biography of Arthur Conan Doyle (p.46). There is a listing of Arthur Conan Doyle’s works (p.47). Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). These “Sherlock Holmes” stories are still popular for over a century. They used to be part of High School English courses. How many other novels from that era are still popular? Doyle followed crime news, his stories were based on true crimes that were adapted to these short stories. The written stories are better than the movies or “graphic novels”, they tell about the life of those times. The drawings of these people make them appear much younger compared to the books. Your Public Library has the full uncensored story in “The Return of Sherlock Holmes”.

It begins at the home of Sherlock Holmes. John McFarlane arrives to ask for help; he is the suspect in the murder of the Norwood Builder, who disappeared after a fire at his lumber yard. The police arrive to arrest McFarlane. Solicitor (a lawyer who handles legal forms) McFarlane was called to write a new will for Oldacre. Why was this will written hurriedly on a train? Holmes goes to McFarlane’s house to and talks to his mother, and learns about Jonas Oldacre. Holmes feels something is wrong about the official police story. Who received those large bank withdrawals from Oldacre? The police found a thumb print at the murder scene that matches McFarlane! A proof of guilt or what? Holmes inspects the construction of the brick wall, then gathers straw to set on fire. The shouts of “FIRE!” have an effect, a missing witness reappears! Can a thumb print be forged? Holmes explains the motive. An innocent man’s life was saved.

It includes selections from the 1830, 1832, and 1842 volumes, together with songs from The Princess and In Memoriam; complete poems from the middle period, including Maud, Enoch Arden, and nine Idylls of the King, including the Dedication; and a generous offering from the late period, 1872-92. The authoritative texts are based on the Cambridge Tennyson; additional selections have been taken from Sir Charles Tennyson's editions of Tennyson's Unpublished Early Poems (1931) and The Devil and the Lady (1930), as well as the Eversley edition, with notes by the poet's son. The texts of the poems are copiously annotated and the lines of poetry conveniently numbered for easy reference. A special section, Juvenilia and Early Responses, offers easy access to work by the young Tennyson, not readily available elsewhere, together with responses from his contemporaries.

Criticism includes significant statements on Tennyson as well as interpretations of the major poems. A special feature is Georg Roppen's essay on Tennyson and the theory of evolution. Other critical voices are those of A. C. Bradley, Harold Nicolson, Douglas Bush, Arthur J. Carr, T. S. Eliot, Paull F. Baum, John Killham, F. E. L. Priestley, Francis Golffing, and Robert W. Hill, Jr.

A Chronology, Selected Bibliography, and Index are also included.

Robert W. Hill, Jr. is Professor of English at Middlebury College. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard and was the recipient of a John Harvard honorary scholarship. He has taught previously at Harvard and at Amherst.

Editorial qualms

As editor of this collection, Robert W. Hill has, I feel, made some rather poor choices. For instance, in the Preface he audaciously writes that he removed "indisputably 'bad'" poems. In this capacity, he omitted "Godiva" -- a great loss -- as well as many charming short verses, well represented in other collections.

Additionally, although he claims deliberately not to have modernized Tennyson's spelling, he nevertheless Americanizes both spelling and punctuation (e.g. "honor" instead of "honour"; consistent placement of the full stop within quotation marks; and so on). This badly affects the very Englishness of Tennyson's voice, I should think.

I would recommend the edition for its highly informed annotations, but not as a source for the poems themselves.

Sloppy editing

Do not buy this book. I adopted it as a text book for a course I am teaching but have found typos in just about every poem I have read in it. Some you can figure out:
"How sweet--while warn airs lull us, blowling lowly"
"Warn" is supposed to be "warm." But others are really confusing:
"Thro' many a women acanthus-wreath divine!"
"Women" is supposed to be "woven." I checked these in the first edition of the Norton Critical--the first edition has the correct lines. I guess Norton just scanned the first edition and put it on the shelves as a second "edition" without even editing it.
Very sloppy work--please don't buy the book. The texts are well selected--it is nice to have The Princess available. And the critical readings are also well chosen. But the texts are hardly readible.

Enjoyable and Enlightening Read

In "You're Not That Great", Dr. Crosby challenges his audience to consider the ways that bias, flawed thinking, and unhelpful habits are holding them back from realizing their full potential. A skilled author, Dr. Crosby manages to treat his subject with both the seriousness it deserves and a lightness that makes the book a hugely enjoyable read. Days after finishing YNTG, I find myself revisiting the book - with highlighter in hand. I am using the real-life application exercises at the end of each chapter to develop a plan for a more deliberate, more fulfilling New Year. I believe that a wide audience - including recent grads, career-changers, parents concerned with an entitlement culture, and anyone in need of boost - will find YNTG a useful and entertaining addition to their library.

The perfect book to pick up before New Year's resolutions or to reset your mind towards a more positive outlook. Entertaining and easy to follow. This is Not Your Typical Self-Help Book

Most other self-help books gush with praise for people telling them how awesome they are. Dr Crosby tells people how awesome they can become, and how to get there.

Although the title is misleading and controversial for a self-help book, it shocks the reader into not being complacent with the status quo, which is awesome, unless of course the reader wants to continue the status quo. In that case the reader should stop reading personal development/improvement books as they may change their situation which is not what they want.

It's definitely a great book for people who question they're self-worth and whether or not they are capable of accomplishing great things. The book shows how to tap into our own inner strengths and do those great feats and become that great person that we imagine ourselves becoming.

Tells you what you need to know

This is pretty good.

I've often wondered why the books written for technicians are, generally speaking, a lot clearer than those written for engineers. I suspect the answer is that the former are written by practitioners while the latter are written by college professors whose grasp of reality tends to be tenuous at best.

Highly recommended as a primer to design and development of pneumatic systems
