This book sets out the principles of engineering practice, knowledge that has come to light through more than a decade of research by the author and his students studying engineers at work. Until now, this knowledge has been almost entirely unwritten, passed on invisibly from one generation of engineers to the next, what engineers refer to as “experience”. This is a book for all engineers. It distils the knowledge of many experts in one volume. The book will help engineers enjoy a more satisfying and rewarding career and provide more valuable results for their employers and clients. The book focuses on issues often seen as “non-technical” in the world of engineering, yet it shows how these issues are thoroughly technical. Engineering firms traditionally have sought expert advice on these aspects from management schools, often regarding these aspects of engineering practice as something to do with psychology or organisational behaviour. The results are normally disappointing because management schools and psychologists have limited insight and understanding of the technical dimensions in engineering work. Little if any of the material in this book can be obtained from management texts or courses. Management schools have avoided the technical dimension of workplace practices and that is precisely what characterises engineering practice. The technical dimension infuses almost every aspect of an engineer’s working day and cannot be avoided. That’s why this book is so necessary: there has not yet been any authoritative source or guidance to bridge the gap between inanimate technical issues and organisational behaviour. This book fills this gap in our knowledge, is based on rigorous research, and yet is written in a style which is accessible for a wide audience.

About the Author

Professor James Trevelyan is a Winthrop Professor in the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering School at The University of Western Australia. His main area of research is on engineering practice, and he teaches design, sustainability, engineering practice and project management.
He is well known internationally for pioneering research that resulted in sheep shearing robots (1975-1993).
He and his students produced the first industrial robot that can be remotely operated via the internet in 1994. The robot has been controlled by a conservatively estimated 500,000 people in dozens of countries.
He was presented with the 1993 Engelberger Science and Technology Award in Tokyo in recognition of his work, and has twice been presented with the Japan Industrial Robot Association award for best papers at ISIR conferences. These are the leading international awards for robotics research.
His teaching has also been well recognised: he was presented with the ASME Award for Mechanical and Mechatronics Teaching at the 2003 AAEE Conference in Melbourne. He has earned four distinguished teaching awards at UWA, and received a further best paper award at the 2004 International Conference on Engineering Education Research conference in the Czech Republic.
From 1996 till 2002 he researched landmine clearance methods and his web site is an internationally respected reference point for information on landmines. He was awarded with honorary membership of the Society of Counter Ordnance Technology in 2002 for his efforts, and was also elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
His most recent work is research on engineering practice that aims to understand how engineering work is actually performed, an aspect of engineering that has not been researched before. This work is helping to explain why engineering and process-oriented companies can typically lose 30% of their turnover from engineering, maintenance and operation mistakes. It also helps to explain why engineering services in the developed world seem to cost much more than they should, often much more than in industrialised countries, and is a significant factor inhibiting poverty reduction. Professor Trevelyan is working on education programs that could help overcome shortcomings in engineering training programmes in developing countries.

Insightful and practical

I haven't read this book in its entirety (few people ever will), but I've spent enough time with it to confidently endorse it.

The author describes what it means to be an expert practicing engineer, and provides wise guidance on how to reach and stay at that level during the course of an engineering career. Some of this guidance may appear counterintuitive to novice engineers, but it does resonate with my own thinking based on almost three decades of experience as a practicing engineer, and it's important to note that the book is largely based on extensive research by the author and his colleagues.

Regarding how to approach the book, don't be daunted by its 600+ pages in a smallish font. The book is structured such that you don't need to read it cover to cover, and it probably makes more sense anyway to dip into it here and there, according to your interests and needs. To most benefit from the book, rather than reading it once and then leaving it on the shelf, I suggest revisiting it over and over again through the course of years and perhaps decades ... so keep it handy!

About the Author
Helen R. Jacobus holds a Ph.D (2011) in Religions and Theology from the University of Manchester. Her main research areas are calendars, astronomy and astrology in the Dead Sea Scrolls and early Judaism. She is currently an honorary research associate at University College London.


Anne Katrine de Hemmer Gudme (Ph.D Copenhagen 2011) is Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Copenhagen. She has published several articles on rituals and cult in the Hebrew Bible as well as a forthcoming (2013) book on votive practice in the Hebrew Bible and the Eastern Mediterranean.


Philippe Guillaume (Ph.D Geneva 2002) is Privatdozent at the University of Berne and member of the current Jezreel Expedition. His most recent book is Land, Credit and Crisis: Agrarian Finance in the Hebrew Bible (2012).

Not up-to-date and spotty information

This short book of 45 pages begins with the F-16A Block 01 model in 1979. The latest model mentioned is the F-16 C/D Block 50/52 (delivered in late 1991). The cutaway drawing is the F-16C version. Specifications are spotty.

Some why and how questions are answered, such as why a lightweight fighter, why the wing choice and other innovations such as the canopy and pilot’s seat. The most interesting part of the book is the F-16’s combat capabilities (how well the F-16 flies) and front line operations (reliability and performance in real combat) by the Israeli and Pakistani air forces. Published in 1990, this book does not include the Iraq and Afghanistan combat assessments.

Vandal is officially my favorite villain! (No spoilers)

I've purchased and read all three of the comics, and I must say that Vandal is the villain who I was most eager to see in action. Being the "evil twin" to Naked Justice he is pretty much a sexual maniac in a sinister sense. He is dark and devilishly handsome, even though this is a porn comic I would have loved to have seen him and NJ romantically involved, but that's a ship I'll keep at a humble level. The second installment of this trilogy is my favorite, due to it depicting the most of Vandal's malicious character. Loved it.

I'm a beginning painter and I used this book to paint portraits (from a photo) of my two little girl cousins for Christmas. Granted, I'm not John Singer Sargent, but the paintings came out much better than I expected. This book, with its clear instructions and logical techniques, gave me the confidence to start painting in the first place.

The pictures are quite small and aren't labled on the picture

This book is VERY informative, but it makes it harder to study when the pictures are labeled with numbers and you have to then match the numbers with a key. Overall, still a useful study tool and a convenient layout.

I like this book

It's a good size with good information. Doesn't really help you chart the course of peripheral nerves too much, but it's done a nice job for me so far on brainstem anatomy. I also like how the ear and eye have their own chapters, so its pretty easy to flip right to the section you need. The numbering identification system takes a little getting used to, but it works. I haven't found any errors yet, but I don't use it that much, mostly as a supplement resource to help visualize things I can't find in Netters Atlas or a new edition of Grays Anatomy. I don't regret this purchase.

Extraordinary

Wonderful book, full of insights, includes biblical references you don't have to look up if you don't want to. It's for everyone that ever felt hurt, not just for someone who has cancer like the author.
I normally give away books after I read them, I'm keeping this one in by bedside drawer. I've memorized parts of it, and I know I'll re-read it again and again.

As many books do, this book delivers a message of faith and hope. As few books do, it shares the raw story of facing unimaginable pain and living to tell about it. It confronts the honest doubts and questions that come when life falls apart. When God Breaks Your Heart is definitely a must-read; you won't be able to put it down.

Ed Underwood served others for many years as a pastor to hurting people, helping them through their darkest hours. Little did this man of God realize how harshly his own faith would be tested.

As a man of faith, Underwood shares his story of suffering and how he gave up on God one night after fighting the effects of chronic leukemia. With his loving wife by his side, who told him he needed to be quiet in his pleadings that particular evening because of the presence of their young grandchildren in the house, Underwood told her flatly not to worry. He wasn't praying any longer, for surely God in all His mighty sovereignty (if He indeed loved him) could stop this infernal pain. So why didn't God do so?

So begins Underwood's spiritual journey of despair, which jump-started at one intolerable point of physical suffering. Even though he continues to fight against this deadly, debilitating and frequently disfiguring disease, Underwood has passed from doubt to trust again. His story, written from the real trenches of the likes of Job's suffering, will challenge, encourage and light the way for countless other Christians who ask their own set of "whys" amidst tragedy.

Using the biblical account of Mary and Martha awaiting the return of Jesus when their brother Lazarus was dying, Underwood closely examines the emotional components of this intimate relationship and how Jesus used His friend's death to glorify God and draw Mary and Martha closer to Him. He rightly expounds upon how these sisters sent a report to Jesus of Lazarus's deteriorating condition when they should have offered direct, faith-driven, bold requests.

So should we. Underwood offers readers a definitive challenge to come boldly to Christ in prayer, making requests and with expectation that He will answer. Lest believers misunderstand, Underwood tells fellow Christ followers never to presume to know God's will; the Bible explicitly tells believers to make their requests known to God. The result is always in God's hands, but Underwood believes it was the fervent prayer of one man who spared his own life as it hung in the balance.

While Underwood's story is compelling, it is his second section, titled "The Dark Road to Glory," that readers will likely find even more satisfying as he takes specific issues of suffering and addresses them chapter by chapter. Evangelicals will better relate to those individuals along their own path who suffer deeply and will be given tools to equip them to speak sensitively and with loving grace rather than spouting unhelpful Christianese that often wounds. Candidly, Underwood shares his own hard-earned wisdom on dealing with pain, misery, God's silence, suicidal thoughts and the heart's spiritual panting for God's comforting presence. Christians will be well-served to read Underwood's account, slowly and prayerfully, and then be prepared to meet their own seasons of suffering with abiding trust in God.

Slow paced story that leaves the best for the VERY last

True to its predecessor, The Mime Order (TMO) was a slow read. While we do not get as much information dumps as we did with The Bone Season, TMO's story moves at a sloth's pace.

We pick up right where The Bone Season (TBS) left us so there is no need to guess what happened between where one left off and the other one picked up. The downside? TMO had 501 pages that could have been full of epic battles, adventurous endeavors, lots of Warden/Paige action...but it fell flat. I get that TMO takes place in London while TBS took place at Sheol I but, do we really need 300+ pages of world building to get anywhere?

ALL IN ALL
-Paige is still a bad ass, if not more. Granted, she could have stood up for herself on more than one occasion (take for instance that one time when Hector and his gang jump her in the middle of town and she just stands there) but given the situations she got herself into I wouldn't have faired any better than she did. So...I cannot be so harsh on her for this.

- Warden is still, well, Warden (and they say that women are complicated). Wish we had seen more of him though. He has two scenes with Paige (the two of them alone) and that is about it. Warden and Paige were the reason why I decided to read TMO and I was left wanting more. I need more!

- The new characters were OK but we really don't see much of them. I hope we get to see more of Ivy, Danica, Nick, Eliza, Nell, Jos, Wynn, and the Ranthen in the following books. I want Ivy to become something BIG! She needs to be stronger and an ally to Paige. They could be totally badass together!

-Jaxon is still Jaxon. Well, Jaxon became what Jaxon would be if he had absorbed the powers and ego of his evil twin...does that make sense?

THE ENDING
That is the badass Paige I know she can be! The ending was great...sadly it took only 450 pages to get there!

I know that the series will amount to something big, I can feel it. But... If there is something I cannot deal with when reading is a slow paced story. Yeah, I get that there needs to be character development and world building but it needn't be that slow. Give me some battles in between, make me want to keep reading through the information dump. Make me want more. The Mime Order shouldn't have taken me so long to read!

And if this is any indiction to what the next 5 books will feel like....I don't know if I will be finishing this series at all. And that is very disappointing as I had great hopes for it!

So Much World Building

Finally finished.... 3.5 Scorched Dreamscape Stars

I liked this much better than The Bone Season. There seemed to be a clearer plot line and things move along at a little better pace. But it is still slightly slow in places to the point I almost started skimming and there is a ton of world building still happening that might have got a little bogged down with details.

Paige is growing on me but the majority of the reason I don't totally love this book is her. She is young and growing but for some of this I think she is so naive and makes choices that I clearly see will get others killed later. However by the end of this book I was totally starting to really like her character a lot more and maybe she is actually learning from the mistakes she made.

Warden is still my favorite character and I find him to possibly be the most interesting character in the book. I really want to know more about him and some of the dynamics of the Rathem. Jaxon is another mystery character that while I hate him, he does fill the page well and I'm not sure just how cruel he could be.

The Ending was fantastic though and I loved the reveal at the end. I had my suspicions but it still had a nice punch to it when it all played out.

The Mime Order is a great addition to the Bone Season series

The Mime Order is a great addition to the Bone Season series. Although it started out slow, after Part 1 finished it was all uphill from there. There is still so much mystery behind the world and the plot but a lot more information is flushed out in this book. I absolutely love Shannon's writing and it makes me want to read more of her works (when she releases more that is). Paige is still an amazing protagonist who does not let anything stand in her way, which I am here for. The side characters are another really strong aspect of the series, especially Nick and Warden who will do anything to protect Paige in her endeavors. Now that I am finished with book 2 it is time to catch up with book 3 because after an ending like that you just need to keep reading!!!
