An awesome reference work
By Paul Leskovyansky
An awesome reference work. I hope to have it autographed at Vinyltech in October.
Some of the best things I have learned about PVC since 1978 have been from hanging out with Dick Grossman in hospitality suites and listening while he discussed PVC with other chemists and engineers. Listening to Dr. Grossman and other erudite souls has been very good to me.

From the Inside Flap
We live in budget-cutting times, and marketing budgets are among the first to get cut. Why? When non-marketing executives take a hard look at the numbers, they often can't see a tangible link between marketing and overall revenue. So if you're a marketer today, you're probably facing the need to do more with less, justify all investments, show results, and still beat the competition. The secret to this balancing act is having—and correctly using—the numbers.

Data-Driven Marketing uses simple, non-technical language to help you to master the latest analytical techniques while maximizing your Return on Marketing Investment (ROMI). You'll take your marketing performance to the next level as you discover:

  • Why more than 80 percent of companies don't make data-driven marketing decisions (and suffer for it)

  • The 15 key metrics every marketer should know

  • The five obstacles to data-driven marketing and how to overcome them

  • In-depth examples of how to apply data-driven principles in small and large organizations

  • How to use the 15 metrics to improve the performance of your campaigns by a factor of five or more

Lots of irrelevant talking but few useful instructions
By Thomas
This book is mainly talking about how important the data analysis is while containing little instruction about how to do it. It takes you forever to find the useful methods and approaches to implement the analysis. If you just want to read the story of the situation of the company before the data analysis is implemented and that after the data analysis is done, buy this book. If you want to learn how to do data analysis, find another book.

A good talk about data-driven marketing but operationally useless
By Carlo Bazzo
I was a bit surprised to see so many 5 stars but eventually I found another 2 star reader among reviews and I totally agree with him.
At first you can be a bit fascinated about the author's talking about the importance of data in marketing and so many important case histories. I firstly read this book when I was still quite inexperienced about marketing and thought "wow this is a great book and finally something more quantitative!". But now after second and third reading and some another tenth of marketing books, I can say my first impression was really wrong. As the other 2-star reviewer said this book is useless. If your thinking, like mine, is that a data-driven marketing book should be operational and practical to be effective, expecially if your background is technical or scientific and "regression" is not a strange word for you, do not buy this book: you would be very disappointed.

Kelly N. Cook, Vice President Marketing & Shoe Lover, DSW
By Kelly Cook
As a Marketing executive, I can understand the challenges of fusing science and art when making daily marketing decisions. Mark has done an exceptional job at articulating simple, yet thoroughly explainable, solutions for achieving successful marketing metrics. He provides an exceptional foundation of mathematical methods in driving ROI, ROAS, profitability and retention.

Data-Driven Marketing accomplishes the one thing that is most critical when running a marketing organization: using data to drive profits. He stresses the critical relationships between business and IT and how, in concert, these two forces can truly revolutionize business results. Using enterprise customer, operational and transactional data in the 15 metrics are key. His book also points out the power of Voice of the Customer data and how its continued mining is important to driving marketing strategy. Another advantage of his metrics are their versatility: simply put...they are industry agnostic.

Mark also does more than just lay out case after case of why these metrics make sense for any marketer. He also interjects fun and humor during the process. This is an aspect any reader can enjoy.

Data-Driven Marketing is an absolute must-have for any marketer interested in good, solid, directional marketing analytics.

The Pickup Artist: The New and Improved Art of Seduction, by Mystery, Chris Odom

The world’s greatest pickup artist is back! After the bestselling exposé The Game pulled back the curtain on Mystery and his culture of professional pickup artists, he became an international phenomenon. Unfortunately, while it’s no secret that Mystery’s ideas are wildly effective, women have started to catch on. They’ve seen the show and heard the routines—so now it’s time for the next level of game! With techniques honed over fifteen years of trial, error, and ultimate triumph, and following his hit VH1 reality series, the celebrated sensei is back with his latest living-large exploits and a new and improved playbook for the twenty-first-century playboy.

As the book begins, Mystery and his crew have withdrawn to their swank Miami mansion to plot their next move. When a new student comes to stay at the house, Mystery draws him deep into the pickup-artist lifestyle and shows him an intimate portrait of the master of seduction. Mystery lays out a complete system of game, and unveils his latest (and fully field-tested) strategies and techniques. The Pickup Artist includes

• a list of all the triggers that create—and destroy—attraction
• a new way to approach strangers and start a conversation: microcalibrated openers
• Mystery’s most powerful humor technique, the Absurd—so you’ll never run out of things to say again
• a full chapter on physical escalation (touching, kissing, “making a move”)
• the solution to inner-game issues, for when you’re not confident enough
• and much, much more

Whether he’s holding court with eager disciples in South Beach, hanging out with his crew of fellow super-seducers in Las Vegas, or partying it up in the Hollywood Hills, Mystery is never far from where the action is—and never fails to get a piece of it. Now it’s your turn. Read The Pickup Artist and get into the game.

Chapter One

WELCOME TO MIAMI

"I am indulging in my humanity," I said.

I took a long drag from my spliff and then passed it matter-of-factly to the blonde seated next to me (without looking at her). She took it as I continued, "And I can say to all of you now, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I"-pause-"have earned it. Eh, brother?" I smiled at Lovedrop, my trusty wingman.

"Mystery, you're damn right," said Lovedrop, "and this is going to be a great year." He raised a glass of chocolate protein shake and took a swig.

"I'm just living in the Now," I said, making a grand, sweeping gesture with my hands. "The Universe presents itself. I mean, look at all the math. It's absolutely brilliant." My straight, dark hair was pulled back into a ponytail, an expression of fascination fixed on my angular face.

The blonde next to me wore my trademark fuzzy black hat. I had used it earlier in the night as a lock-in prop. It was too big on her, and she looked very cute with it on. She had almond-shaped doe eyes and wide, Slavic features-my favorite type. She smiled at me. It was on. I'd been working on this one for a few hours; I was just comfort building now.

"This couch looks like something out of The Jetsons!" said the other girl, a brunette with long, straight hair. She wore a green cocktail dress and dark eye makeup. "I love this rug, though. It must cost you a fortune to have it cleaned."

The four of us-Lovedrop, the two women, and I-relaxed on a white shag rug. Lining the wall around us was a futuristic, white leather couch. Everything was white. The fourteen-thousand-dollar custom curtains were white. The giant avant-garde, plastic light fixtures around the house were white. Even the dog was white.

Seated in a nook nearby at a glass table was our acquaintance, the Rat. He was using his debit card to crush a few small blue pills on the surface of the table. The Rat flashed a sagging, loose smile from wet lips.

"Hey LD," he said, a slight whine to his voice, slurring, "you want one of these Roxies?"

Lovedrop smirked. "Haven't you had enough already? You look like you're about to drool all over that table."

The girls giggled.

"Is that a no?" The Rat kept smiling greasily as if to say, You know you want some.

A projector played music videos on the far wall of the room, and a bouncy hip-hop song came on. Lovedrop got up and started to dance to the music, bathed in the changing light of the projector. "I love this song," he said, and he was only half lying. It wasn't what he would actually sit around listening to through a pair of headphones, but it was perfect for dancing with girls.

The brunette stood up and started to dance with him. "Do you guys own this house?" she asked, the shag rug feeling oh-so-soft under her bare feet. All the pieces came together as a vibe: the beat of the music, the light from the projector, the dancing, the laughter, the smoke in the air. He put one hand on her hip and circled the other in the air like swinging a lasso.

"Hey Mystery," said Lovedrop, "remember the Matthew McConaughey chicken dance? In Vegas." He started flapping his arms like a chicken.

"I don't know about Matthew McConaughey, but you're in Miami now," said the Rat. "Hey LD, you look like the Backstreet Boys with that dance you're doing." He snickered under his breath and licked his lips.

"I guess I was lucky all I got was their dance moves," said Lovedrop. "And meanwhile you got stuck with their goatee, smack-dab in the middle of your face."

"Ouch," said the brunette. She smiled at Lovedrop and tucked her hair behind one ear.

The Rat scooted back in his futuristic chair and placed his hand on his chest indignantly. "LD, I'm hurt," he said in his whiny voice. "I'm hurt that you would say that. After everything that I would do for you." He actually sounded sad; it was good.

The Rat paused and then pushed it a little further. "LD, you know I love you like a brother, don't you? You guys, you're like brothers to me. I love you guys."

The brunette joked, "The girl is supposed to say 'I love you' first." She tossed her hair back and forth with the music, little green earrings swinging.

"Do you really know Matthew McConaughey?" the blonde asked me as she handed me the spliff. She touched her cheek and then ran her fingers back through her hair.

"No, no," I said, holding the spliff daintily. My nails were freshly painted black, matching my toes. I paused to take a drag. "I met him once in Vegas. In a small club. Not Tangerine, but near there. I saw him do his chicken dance."

The girls both said, "What's the chicken dance?" and then they looked at each other and giggled.

Lovedrop explained: "It's how McConaughey was picking up women. It's his game."

The blonde shook her head. "Matthew McConaughey doesn't need game to pick up women. He's hot."

"I deduced his game plan," I continued, "at least for that night. But I presumed he must have used this particular tactic before." I took a final drag from the spliff and then extinguished it directly onto the glass coffee table, then continued: "I was at this club in Vegas and there he was, doing this weird chicken dance, and of course it gets a reaction. McConaughey's flapping his arms around and walking low, and bobbing his head up and down. Just drunk as a skunk-"

"It provokes people!" said Lovedrop.

My voice took on a conspiratorial tone as I continued: "They make comments to each other about how funny he looks, and they start to ask each other, 'Who is that guy?' And then finally someone says, 'Wait, that's Matthew McConaughey!' and it starts to get around."

I spoke with a certain rhythm, and a fascinated glint in my eye. "Soon, McConaughey's got everyone whispering, 'He's that movie star' and 'Wasn't he dating so-and-so?' His value demonstrations got uploaded into everyone's head. People are looking at him, talking about him; the whole room is warmed up for him."

I paused, opened both of my hands, and continued: "And it worked. He started chicken dancing with this girl. And he was crossing some barriers, he was socially violating a little bit, but knowingly. I'm more than certain he knew what he was doing."

I suddenly produced a plastic eyeball and held it up for everyone to see. Then I tossed it into the air and it vanished, eliciting a gasp. I grinned and said, "McConaughey made his own chicken splash, all over the room."

Everyone laughed. "Did you talk to him?" asked the blonde.

"Well, I talked to him for a few minutes," I said. "He and I had dated the same girl, Jackie, and we talked about our dogs . . ."

The blonde squeezed my skinny arm and said, "Do you guys know what Mystery said to me tonight, when I walked by? He looked over at me like he's curious about something and then he says, 'You ever dump in a gold toilet?' "

The brunette's jaw dropped open. "Are you serious?" she said.

The blonde giggled. She started to apply some lip gloss and said, "I couldn't believe it at first: That was his opener! And then he says it again: 'I said, you ever dump in a gold toilet? It's divine!' "

Both of the girls burst out laughing, and the brunette looked at me and said, "Oh my God! I never would have talked to you if you had said that to me!"

The blonde continued, " . . . I mean who talks like that?"

No one talks like that, my dear, I thought; not when they're trying to impress you. That's the point. I'm a firm believer in disqualifying myself as a potential suitor early on; the pickup just seems to go easier that way.

The blonde started toying with the strap on her purse, and then she said, "We were curious about you guys, though. We thought you were in a band or something. Are you in a band?"

The brunette said, "Yeah really, what do you guys do? Were you serious about that pickup artist stuff?"

You couldn't blame them for being curious. Our house, Project Miami, was a fifty-four-hundred-square-foot mansion in Coconut Grove. It looked like a work of modern art, white, angular, and rising above the surrounding lush vegetation. Our driveway was like a luxury auto dealership, filled with different models of Mercedes, a white Bentley, and the Rat's black Lexus with cheesy custom rims. With the exception of the Lexus, not a single car was worth less than a hundred thousand dollars. Not that we had paid for any of them with pickup artist money-we were onto a new caper in Miami.

"It's true, in a way," Lovedrop admitted. "We teach seminars on how to be social and meet people. We call it the Venusian Arts. And we help guys learn how to talk to girls." He paused and then said, "We just want everyone to have as much fun as we do, because so many guys in the bar don't know what they are doing."

The blonde nodded in agreement. "That's for sure. Most of the guys in the club are such douchebags! Seriously, you guys were the most fun of any guys that we talked to all night." She's pretty, I thought as I looked at her. She reminds me of my ex-girlfriend.

"For sure," echoed the brunette. "You guys were definitely the most fun."

"Yeah," said Lovedrop, strutting with faux arrogance. "All the other girls were jealous of you guys because you got to hang out with us."

The brunette laughed. "Oh my God, you are so full of yourselves." She shook her head.

"Oh, hey guys," I said suddenly, "do you want to see the piece I did for Current TV?" I pulled out my iPhone, started a video, and handed it to the blonde. There I was on TV before her eyes, being interviewed like a big shot. The whole night I had been uploading my own value demonstrations into her head. It was like I was going down a checklist:

Fame? Current TV clip. Check.

Center of attention? Matthew McConaughey Story, everyone listens eagerly. Check.

Preselection? I dated this beautiful girl. Check.

Leader of men? "Are you ready for this? I am the tribal leader." Check.

Strong identity? Grounding routine. Check. Avatar. Check.

Social alignments? "I want you to meet my cool friends." Intro Lovedrop. Check.

Presently, the blonde said, " 'World's Greatest Pickup Artist,' that's what it says on this video." She looked up at me.

I said, "Yeah, are you ready for this?" My pale skin gave me a vampiric charm in the glow of the projector, a reminder of my nocturnal lifestyle. "Turns out, some people think I'm the world's greatest pickup artist! Isn't that crazy?" I said it as if I found it strangely surprising.

The blonde snorted derisively. "Yeah right. I'm the one who picked you up tonight. And you were easy."

"Easy is just a word that people use when they're feeling overconfident," I replied. "But beauty is common. There are models all over South Beach. Personally, I prefer a woman with more flaws, more character. That's what I like about you. There is beauty in imperfection." I nodded at her seriously and continued: "You're one of us! I can tell. All that boy/girl stuff aside. You're in your humanity like the rest of us."

The Rat rolled up a one-dollar bill and made it into a straw, and then he leaned forward and snorted a fat line of blue powder from the glass table in front of him. His spiky black hair glistened from too much hair gel. "Hey LD," he said, "you should check out my modeling portfolio. I was a professional model, you know. I used to be in really good shape. I was even skinnier and more ripped than you."

"And you can be again," said Lovedrop. He took another swig from his protein shake and said, "I was overweight when I moved here a few months ago."

"Really?" asked the brunette, squeezing his bicep. "You look good now."

"Do you really mean that?" he flexed proudly.

"Of course." She giggled. "You're buff."

"Now I feel validated," Lovedrop said, beaming like a little boy. Then, as if with resignation, he said, "Oh, all right, you can have a hug . . ." and he rolled his eyes and looked away, opened his arms to her, and gave her a big hug. Squeezing her close, he paused momentarily. He was about to say, You smell good, but then he felt her stiffen just a little, and so to err on the side of caution, he said, "All right, that's all you get, now get off of me," then he pushed her away and rolled off.

Lovedrop thought to himself, I'll just keep plowing her comfort levels and see how far I can get tonight. No big deal. I'll just go back and escalate again in a minute . . .

Just then, we all heard a sharp muffled crack, followed by a distant sound like a woman's moan.

Everyone stopped.

"What was that?" asked the brunette.

"What was what?" said Lovedrop.

Then they heard it again, a distinct slapping sound followed by a woman's moan, and then again. It sounded like she was being spanked.

"That's Johnny," said the Rat. "He's down in his room with that flight attendant girl."

The brunette raised an eyebrow.

"Who all lives here?" asked the blonde.

Too many questions, I thought.

"Johnny just rents a room here," said Lovedrop. "He has his own place across town. He's a good guy. And he's also into bondage." Then he joked, "You should see the dungeon at his other house!"

"Wait a sec," said the brunette reservedly. "Are you saying there is a dungeon down there, with whips and chains and stuff?"

"No, no," I said, "he just has a bedroom here. She visits sometimes; they're into spanking." I sounded certain, sincere, no big deal.

I better make this quick, I thought. Next thing you know Matador will come walking out here with his shirt off. "Oh!" I said suddenly, "that reminds me. Have you guys ever seen Google Earth?" I thought, bullshit baffles brains.

"Oh yeah," said the blonde, "you were talking about that at the bar, right?"

"Oh my God, you have to see it." I was enthusiastic. "It's the most amazing thing. I have already flown all around Miami in Google Earth. Come on, I'll show you on my projector." I stood up, tall and skinny, and grabbed her by the hand. I looked like Tommy Lee; my avatar was an image I had created through years of experimentation. She looked at the brunette, and the two locked eyes.

It wasn't useful and Mystery just showed off that he is rich and famous
By Michael Bluth
This book isn't really about teaching you techniques but rather explaining Mystery's lifestyle and expensive tastes (living in a Miami posh $25,000/month home) and he basically brags throughout the whole book about all the cars he has, all his exploits, and how he thinks he is awesome.

He may very well be very awesome, and I'm sure he's a cool guy to be around, but this book is way too watered down, probably contains about 10 pages or so of useful information, and the rest describing Mystery's lavish lifestyle.

I give this book one star because I was looking for a book that would be instructional kind of like his last book, "The Mystery Method" which I found highly informative BUT very difficult to implement. It was just simply way too complicate (but worth the time to digest and memorize/understand).

Maybe this book tries to address the complexity of his last book, but instead it comes out as a dud as it doesn't teach enough.

In a sense, this book is kind of like "The Game" which you'll hear every guy who's read it ask you surreptitiously, "So... have you read the game?" The problem is that that book talked a lot about Neil's exploits too but lacked a lot on instruction. So why do I mention this? Because this book is basically that too.

Also, it seems that these books carry a lot of hype, and I noticed that "pickup artist" books/DVDs/etc. have a high amount of competition and each party arguing that they are correct/better and the other one is not. It is juvenile.

They have a lot of "wow" factor, but little in practical/"easy keep it simple and straightforward" advice and much of it you already probably know such as A) Be smiling B) Be confident C) Be Relaxed D) Create a Personal Connection. And other common sense things like dress well, groom yourself well, EXERCISE, eat well, go out often rather than staying addicted to the computer playing video games, being a loner, etc.

I'm coming to the conclusion that basically pickup isn't that difficult.

Basically, the whole ideology is to

A) When you see a girl that you like, you don't indicate interest in her (at least not right away), you treat her as a guy friend. That way she doesn't think that you're hitting on her, and when you're a girl who is hit on everyday you would definitely get tired of "How are you?s" and "You are so pretty." This is good advice.
B) If she's really attractive or has a high ego because of her beauty, you bring her down a little bit by indirectly commenting on her. For instance, if you say, "Nice necklace, it reminds me of the one my 80 year old Grandma wears!" --- you're giving a compliment but you're always subconsciously making her feel bad because you're comparing her tastes with an 80 year old Grandmas lol.
C) Once she starts getting interested in you, and starts seeing that you are different and that you are NOT sexually interested in her at first (even though you think she is gorgeous), you can talk with her, show your personality, escalate kino (that means subtle touching ex) on the shoulder, or grabbing her hand, hugging, etc) to develop comfort, etc.. The whole point though ISN'T to never display sexuality but rather don't appear attracted to her at first so as to make her think that she's not anything special. Once she sees you as someone who is better than the rest of the guys, then she should hopefully should vie for your attention.

Overall, "pickup" isn't mainly about scripted lines, scripted openers, etc., it's about IDEOLOGY and being aligned with that ideology. I think that pickup is more of an attitude more than anything else and this is basically what Mystery is saying.

So in any case, would I recommend this book? Definitely not. It's way too watered down and lacking in content but rather focuses too much about a successful and popular man boasting about his accomplishments. It's really annoying.

Some other things to note:

1) I would recommend his other book, "The Mystery Method" as that is pretty good and covers EVERYTHING that is in this book and more, but I would take the time to study it and take notes/memorize/understand that book. To get a better idea of that book you definitely to read it 2-3x and probably more to keep it fresh.
2) Ignore all the 5-star hype reviews that may be affiliated with the author or are probably just b.s. . If you notice on the day the book came out, there were a lot of suspicious 5 star reviews --- which makes you think how can someone review a book so soon when A) they probably didn't even read it yet and B) they didn't have a chance to use it enough.
3) Sell your computer (i'm in the process of selling mine), delete your video games, terminate your internet subscription, and cancel TV. If you want to get girls, your main problem is going out enough. Pickup is a game about numbers, which is something that Mystery is correct about --- the more girls that you encounter and interact with the better your odds are. If you need internet, use it at a friend's house, or probably more practically at your local library.
4) Stop killing kittens by looking at porn videos. Having a high sex drive will make you want to go out and get girls.
5) Workout, eat well, and dress well too. A good body will always turn heads. Being fat won't. This is truth.
6) KEEP PICKUP THEORY AND KNOWLEDGE SIMPLE AND DON'T OVERCOMPLICATE IT. One of the biggest problems with PICKUP THEORY is that if you are one who loves to absorb knowledge, you might want to read everything, watch everything, etc. But remember folks, this isn't a SCIENCE, this is an art --- it may or may not work on you --- and delivery is much more important than anything else. So the point I am making is that, once you've reached a comfortable level of theory, stop being obsessed with reading so much and just go out and practice. And sure you can learn how to bike without having biked before, or learning how to workout without having done it before, but no progress will EVER happen if you never go out and apply what you learned. And for many of you, the beginning will be the biggest hill to conquer, so never give up and work hard and continually refine yourself --- and be aware, you will fail multiple times, but that is okay, for each time you fail, you will learn a new valuable lesson and you will become a little more socially calibrated.

The Necessary Supplement
By Bradley
In this field, I believe Mystery still is top-dog. His writing style is preferable compared to all others, in my opinion. Do not buy this book until you have read his first book and are, at least, familiar with his general demeanor in real-life. Otherwise, he may seem un-realatable and too far divorced from the common man.

Having said that, this book is a perfect and necessary supplement to his first book. If you like the security of extremely structured and canned routines, this is not for you. If you understand the message that he is truly trying to convey, you will realize that he focuses on accentuating your personal best qualities and is generally making you a more pleasant person to be around. He treats the game as a performance art. Excuse the strong language, but he "prepares you for battle" in a sense. While there is a general linear structure that can be followed, he more or less coaches you on the tools you will need when presented with new experiences. It is almost comparable to a business book on how best to sell yourself, BUT, instead Mystery flips this on its head and emboldens you to create frames where everyone must sell themselves to you because you are "the flame and the ghost."

I believe he greatly undersells the effectiveness and the quick-implementation his methods have. I have found an uptick in results already. I am already a fairly sociable person, so maybe the learning gap was not as great, but what makes his writing so easy-to-understand and relatable is that, although he is very successful, intelligent, and somewhat arrogant, his mind still can comprehend the foreign nuances that many self-proclaimed players have long since forgotten. Not only does he describe "what" will work, but he also describes "why" things work. You can tell he has spent time in his life studying sociology, psychology, and theater.

My greatest criticisms of the work were the redundancies and that the character "Adam" was obviously only created in order for Mystery to write in his preferred conversational format rather than writing another book with large text-book style sections. His in-set routines often rely on the fact that he is an illusionist, which seems like an un-relatable and unfair advantage for readers trying to emulate him, but a more-thorough understanding of the material will lead you to understand that passion for hobbies is more paramount and illusions, while helpful, are merely a tool that work just as well as other tools.

Overall, A plus book...but only as a supplement. The first book is comparable to reading FOOTBALL for Dumbies, and this book is like a book about learning how to master the West Coast Offense. Once you understand the rules, and know how to score, then you begin studying how best to score and win games with the resources you've got.

Mystery's humanity
By Dead.Vargas
Don't mind about the low-rating reviews. This book is just plain awesome. Maybe it's not that original -- there are many concepts that were previously presented in other Venusian Arts books. But thing is that, in this book, Mystery shows us a very human side of him. He shows us why many of his ingenious teachings work, which is something that is not shown in other Venusian Arts products.

I strongly suggest that you buy this book. It's not a breakthrough nor something incredibly mind-blowing (that was the case for his first book), but it is a worthy book for any PUA student aiming higher.

Constructing Your Identity Kenneth Basin They had been subjected to indignity after indignity. They had paid over six months’ salary per person for the “privilege” of relinquishing their Soviet citizenship (though conveniently enough, they had lost their jobs upon applying for their visas and being labeled refusniks). They had stood quietly as armed soldiers barraged them with accusations of treason, anti-Semitic slurs, and threats of imprisonment. But standing in that train station in the Ukrainian border town of Chop, waiting for the train that would take them out of the Soviet Union and on the first leg of their journey to the United States, my parents had finally had enough: they would not let a book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales go. The Russian customs official who made the final inspection of their bags had removed only the book, leaving my parents grateful that they had gotten off rather easily. But as they started toward the train platform, my sister (then five years old) lingered behind, growing increasingly hysterical at the loss of her favorite book. My father pled with the official, not as a refusnik to a soldier or a Jew to an ethnic Russian, but as one father to another, for the return of his daughter’s beloved book. It was November 22, 1981, and my parents and sister boarded their train westward with two suitcases of clothing, $210 in cash, and a book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Though I was not yet born, it is a story I have to come to know and feel as deeply as any of my own. In my experience, it is in the home that one’s eyes are first opened to the outside world, and my parents saw to it from early on that my eyes were wide open. With a family that had immigrated as political refugees to the United States, arriving in January 1982, international affairs took on a whole new life within my home. The end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union were more than headlines my father read in the newspaper; they were personal experiences shared by every member of my family. When I began my studies at the University of Southern California, then, I never doubted that my cosmopolitan interests would find a way to express themselves. I set out on a study-abroad program to London in January 2004 in search of the one lesson I felt that USC, or any American university, could never truly offer me: perspective. And so it was that on my summer break in Europe after attending King’s College London, I found myself retracing my parents’ experiences through the continent on their way to the United States. In Eastern Europe, the legacy of Soviet Cold War domination allowed me to communicate using my proficiency in conversational Russian. In Bratislava, I arrived by train at the same station that received my parents’ train from Chop. In Vienna, I passed by the palace where for six days my parents were held under armed guard to protect them from terrorists who had been targeting Jews and other refugees from the east in the winter of 1981. In Rome, I strolled through the neighborhood where my parents spent three weeks, waiting for their visas to enter the United States to clear. Given my experience with my family, my interest in international law comes as little surprise. When I consider the challenges my parents faced in the repressive climate of the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War, as well as those they confronted in trying to escape it, the vitality of the field takes on a whole new salience for me: the modern world is a deeply interconnected one, and with that interconnection comes an underlying sense of uncertainty. If man is to survive that uncertainty, he must find in it a guiding order. In my mind, international law is the means by which humanity can find that essential order and, with it, the stability and progress necessary to thrive. In the end, I have come to feel very strongly that the whole world is my home and, more than that, my responsibility. From the twinkling lights of Paris to the dusty corridors of one-time communist Budapest, from the bustle and excitement of the Turkish bazaar to the natural peace and beauty of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, I have long believed that the world is my classroom. I have very much enjoyed attending class. Review by Emma Lind This essay’s effectiveness rests in its deeply personal nature. Because Kenneth’s interest in international law can be understood only in terms of his family history, it could not have been written by anyone else. The fact that he is able to communicate the profundity of his family’s escape from political oppression with clarity and concision, and then spin that into his personal draw to the field of law, is what makes this essay dexterous and strong. The first sentence of the essay is punchy, essential to grabbing a law school admissions officer’s attention and ensuring that [he or she] remember[s] the essay when comparing [Kenneth’s] application to others. The introductory paragraph delivers what the first sentence promises: a gripping story that is universally fascinating but holds enough personal elements to give it a raw authenticity. This is the strongest paragraph in the essay, as it communicates the author’s ability to synthesize information he heard from his parents and establish both a historical context for it and a deep personal connection to it. The second and third paragraphs clearly transition the essay from a story of [Kenneth’s] family to a story of himself. His mention of study in London gives purpose to his decision to go abroad, which would appear on his transcript without any context or explanation. Notice also how he mentions that he speaks Russian, and communicates his interest and dedication to history, without being ostentatious about it. He mentions law only at the end of the essay, but the connection is strong enough that his conviction comes off as confident and to the point. Kenneth, however, could have done more with his last sentence, which is trite and doesn’t draw on a theme present throughout the essay. He should have mentioned his family history again to bring the essay full circle. Nicole Dooley It usually takes people several attempts to figure me out. With the toffee-colored skin and curly hair that I inherited from my black father and Puerto Rican mother, my racial heritage has never been easy to guess. I’ve been assumed to be white, black, Hispanic, South Asian, and Middle Eastern, to name a few. With my background so hard to place, I could fit quite nicely into the predominantly white suburbs where I grew up. I didn’t look or feel all that different from the Dohertys or the Barravecchios living there. The racial homogeneity of my upbringing had an unfortunate side effect: I never had an opportunity to connect with black or Hispanic culture outside of my family. Growing up, I didn’t really notice. Acute racial awareness did not hit me until college. At that point, Rice University was the most diverse place I had ever lived. At first, I spent my free time with my South Asian and white roommates, as I was not ready to explore the black and Hispanic groups on campus. Soon enough, though, I ventured out, hoping they would add a sense of belonging to my life that I thought was lacking. I joined the Black Student Association, eager to find my niche. Instead, at every meeting or event I attended, I stayed on the outskirts, feeling separated, as if I were observing through a glass wall. I couldn’t commiserate about being racially profiled, and I could get my hair wet whenever I wanted. My feelings of disappointment were so cutting that I didn’t attempt a single foray into the Hispanic group on campus. As someone who didn’t speak Spanish fluently, I feared that I would feel similarly disconnected. By the time I graduated from Rice, I had decided to take steps to grow into my ethnicity. To begin this journey, I spent three weeks in Puerto Rico. My intent was to speak only Spanish for the duration of the trip and lose myself in the culture. Unfortunately for me, everyone on the island spoke English and could tell my Spanish was not up to par as soon as the first anglicized hola came out of my mouth. As for culture, I felt oddly unexposed. My relatives took me to all the tourist spots and malls, where the customs mirrored those of the white neighborhoods where I had been raised. Ultimately, my trip brought me no closer to identifying with my Hispanic heritage, and I returned to the States disappointed. The next part of my journey involved my postgraduation plans: teaching in inner-city Atlanta. I did not pick this path so that I could explore my “blackness,” but it was a fortunate side effect. I saw the experience as an opportunity to connect with and learn about African American culture—my culture. From the start, my seventh graders branded me as an outsider by not referring to me as light-skinned, their sign of acceptance. Instead, I was white. I quickly learned that to them, being black was less of a genetic fact and more of an attitude, which I initially lacked. The rejection I felt fully eclipsed the disconnection I felt in college. However, necessity is the mother of invention, and I needed my students to accept me in order to achieve my goals of racial acceptance and effective teaching. As each day passed, I related to them a little more by spending time with them at school and at their homes, both during the week and on the weekends. By the end of the year, my students serenaded me with songs about their light-skinned teacher. My personal quest for ethnicity was over; my students had taught me how to belong. Part of my duty as their teacher was to return the favor by teaching them how to belong in the world outside their inner-city neighborhood. Unfortunately, I was unable to give my students a complete picture of their greater surroundings within the confines of the classroom. I realized that in order to help my students, I needed to go beyond the classroom into the realm of law. Many of the obstacles preventing them from attaining a complete education stemmed from issues within ...

Good sample essays, poor commentary
By kaybee
This is a good book to read if you are interested in seeing sample law school admissions essays. In general, these essays are written at a high level of quality to which many law school applicants would aspire.

However, the title of this book is somewhat misleading. These essays are not necessarily "successful" in the sense that they definitely helped the writers to get into law school; these essays were submitted to the Harvard Crimson newspaper by their authors, not identified by Harvard admissions officers as exceptional essays. Therefore, although these are the essays of successful applicants, it is hard to say to what extent the essays factored into admissions decisions. Based on the quality of the essays compared to the quality of the applicants (most of whom are practicing lawyers with profiles posted online), I'd guess that other factors played a much stronger role in the admission of many of these candidates.

The quality of the commentary provided in this book is also questionable. The reviewers are undergraduate student reporters, not admissions officers, and in many cases their commentary is at odds with that provided by admissions officers on law school web pages and in interviews. Further, the commentary is provided by multiple different reviewers, and each has a different idea of what constitutes a good essay. If nothing else, one might recall this diversity and feel comforted later, when some school unexpectedly offers up a rejection letter -- admissions committees probably have opinions just as diverging as those of Harvard undergraduates. In any case, I wouldn't use the opinions of these students, good writers though they undoubtedly are, as a guide on how to craft a great essay for the very specific purpose of law school admissions.

Inspiration
By DSeverance
Inspiration, but nothing else. I really liked this book and it helped inspire me in my writing process, but it gave me nothing else beyond that. The personal essay is just that, personal, and so, just note, that this will not "write the essay for you" or give you skills over night. Just a helpful note from a current law student to potential, future law students.
