Review
"This book is what separates good designers, from great designers. It bridges the often neglected gap between business, design and strategy. A must have resource." --Jacob Cass, Brand Identity Consultant and Founder of Just Creative

"If Davis' book isn't the best book written for strategists, it is waaaaaay up there. Last time I liked a strategist's book this much was Steel's Truth, Lies, and Advertising." --Luke Sullivan, Author of Hey, Whipple, Squeeze This: The Classic Guide to Creating Great Ads

“Creatives are often pigeonholed by our industry as just “artists”. But not if we all read this book. Finally there’s an in-depth guide to help designers, copywriters and others infuse strategic business-thinking into every piece of creative work” --Pete Barry, Creative Director and Author of The Advertising Concept Book

Gold
By Amazon Customer
While reading ‘Creative Strategy and the Business of Design’ I realized there were some critical pieces missing in my pitches to prospective clients. With a graduate degree in design this wasn’t something I was proud of.

Davis’ book is gold for three main reasons. It gives you the business strategy framework in laymans terms, easy enough for you to take and apply right away. Doug painstakingly made sure everything in this book was something you could absorb, use, and apply.

Secondly, If you know anything about design, making the complex simple is no easy task. This book excels at that very thing.

Lastly, this is not some business guy sans talent preaching how you should approach your design business. Doug is a creative, through and through. I should know. We both attended the Pratt graduate design program in New York City together.

I finished this book on Sunday June 5th with an important client meeting the following day. This was a cerebral group but they were immediately at ease knowing there was a structure and a process. This increased both my alignment and my value. I attribute the success and subsequent engagement of that meeting to this book.

Insightful book on the business aspects of design
By Parka
This book is for creative professionals who want to understand more about the business aspect of design industry. It has lots of insights that should benefit freelancers, especially those who have to work with clients, big companies.

This book goes through the why of design. It answers questions like who are the customers that you're targeting, how you should target them, how to be relevant to them, and how to meet the business objectives of your clients who are paying you. There are explanation of different strategies involved, how you should approach your project and the different aspects to consider besides design itself.

So it's not just as simple as coming up with a beautiful graphic. It's about making your work relevant to people who see it so that it can be effective at bringing the message across.

The content is not something you would expect to be taught at design schools. And it's precisely because of that that this book is going to be helpful to creative professionals, especially those who have ambitions of creating work with greater impact.

Overall, the concepts presented allows you to take a top down view at creative work. It's mostly strategy, and it explains the difference between strategy and execution. If you want more practical hands-on advice, I would recommend you check out Burn Your Portfolio: Stuff they don't teach you in design school, but should too.

Book from a Knowledgeable Author. #GetIt
By Johnny
Not many people know authors from books, so they are not sure if what they write is their professional opinion or just Wikipedia input. But I was a student at the college which Douglas Davis teaches at and from what I hear from friends and peers he is a great professor very knowledgeable, and he took that and wrote a book. Someone that's in the graphic design field with strong proof that he is the field and ontop of that he is a educator wrote that book. You couldn't ask for more. I highly recommend this book if your in the field, if your a college professor recommend it to your students, or any business owner who wants to make their business stronger clientele based and generally. #GetIt

Amazon.com Review
Much more than a "how-to" guide for memorizing the meanings of the tarot cards, Tarot as a Way of Life reveals how the major and minor arcana represent the day-to-day and lifetime process of individuation. With a marvelous comparison of the symbolic differences between decks, Karen Hamaker-Zondag explains why it's important to choose a deck that speaks to you. While most guides to the tarot approach the cards only as a method of divination, Tarot as a Way of Life delves into the tarot's illustrations as a manifestation of the life process and explains how this deck of cards can affect you.

A good idea that falls apart on closer examination
By Darrow
First of all I would like to say that I do believe this is a "Genuine" book that has been written by somobdy who really believes the subject material as opposed to someone trying to make a quick buck. But equally in joining Numerology with Tarot the Writer (in this publication at least) evidently hasn't thought things through very well.
In simple terms what you find in these pages is something like this - say for example the cards that are Numbered "Nine", 5 + 4 = 9 so the Writer goes into great detail about the meanings of Five and Four in Numerology thus revealing the meaning of the card. All well and good but what about 7 + 2 - that equals Nine too. Or what about 3 + 6? Or 8 + 1? You see the problem here? Why has the author settled on this particular equation while ignoring the others?

Another basic fallacy that the Writer has made is the number of the cards in History. They make a great deal about the earliest Fourteenth century origin of Tarot Cards and why the number was set at 78 cards - but of course it WASN'T set at 78, this was a development with late Eighteenth Century Occultists - most of whom admitted later in life that it was all a hoax anyway. The Cary Yale certainly wasn't 78 cards. The Visconte Sforza has had the "Missing" cards reproduced in the 1970's but the general consensus among experts is that they never existed anyway. The Minchiate is not 78 cards, and a number of others, again you get the problem here.

There is some value here as alternative interpretatios to think about but there is so many holes in the Writers theory that discretion needs to be employed when using this method.

The single best book on Tarot I've seen
By A Customer
This is a book that not only tells you what the Tarot cards mean--in plain English--but also gives a concise, credible explanation for why each card means what she says it means. She draws heavily on Jungian psychology in her interpretation of the Major Arcana, and on numerology (filtered through folklore and mythology) for the Minor Arcana, but in both cases she refers directly to what's actually on the cards--helping the reader see them as a coherent symbolic system, not just mysterious pictures. (She mostly uses the Rider-Waite deck, but gives an extended justification for her choice, comparing it symbolically with other popular decks.) I don't know that I necessarily agree with every one of her interpretations--but that's actually one of the book's great strengths. After reading it, I felt that I understood enough of what was going on in the Tarot to begin to have my own opinions. Hamaker-Zondag, who's a noted astrologer, includes a chapter on attempts to combine Tarot and astrology--and concludes that it may not be possible. She also includes straightforward, common-sense advice on how to conduct a reading and lay out the cards--instructions that are far more helpful than those in other Tarot books I've read. The one thing I don't like about this book is the title. It sounds like it's inviting you to join a cult. It's really one of the most feet-on-the-ground introductions you're likely to find.

Really insightful
By Jalice
I'm what you might call an intermediate tarot apprentice, so I've been reading several tarot books lately. This is by far the best book I've encountered for someone with a proficient level who is seeking a deeper understanding. Whether or not you're familiar with C.G. Jung's work, you'll find this book insightful and invaluable on your journey of self-discovery.

Hamaker-Zondag illustrates the importance of visual symbols as the language of the unconscious, thus arguing it is inefficient to disregard the artwork with your nose buried in the book. She compares the imagery of 6 different decks as an example. She explains the Jungian archetypal significance for numbers, which was MOST illuminating. She also gives well-balanced meanings for each of the cards, after having so thoroughly explained why such meanings are associated with each card.

I highly recommend this book. (But perhaps not so much for beginners).

Yoga: Discipline of Freedom: The Yoga Sutra Attributed to Patanjali, by Barbara Miller

Dating from about the third century A.D., the Yoga Sutra distills the essence of the physical and spiritual discipline of yoga into fewer than two hundred brief aphorisms. It is the core text for any study of meditative practice, revered for centuries for its brilliant analysis of mental states and of the process by which inner liberation is achieved. Yet its difficulties are legendary, and until now, no translation has made it fully accessible.

This new translation, hailed by Yoga Journal for its "unsurpassed readability," is by one of the leading Sanskrit scholars of our time, whose Bhagavad Gita has become a recognized classic. It includes an introduction to the philosophy and psychology underlying the Yoga Sutra, the full text with explanatory commentary, and a glossary of key terms in Sanskrit and English.

From the Inside Flap
"A text that is really essential to anyone's understanding of Indian philosophy or the practice of yoga. Barbara Stoler Miller's translation is her masterpiece, a great swan song. It is a most extraordinary translation, a great translation."—Wendy Doniger, University of Chicago Divinity School

From the Back Cover
The Yoga Sutra, dating from about the third century A.D., distills the essentials of a complex system of physical and spiritual discipline into not quite two hundred brief aphorisms. Yoga is at the heart of all meditative practice in Asia, yet until now there has been no first-rate English version of this primary text. Barbara Stoler Miller's translation admirably fills that gap - her clear, strong style and sensitive phrasing convey every nuance of Patanjali's words, and her commentary offers invaluable guidance to anyone seeking to understand how yoga describes our relation to the world.

Excellent for a first reading
By Dennis Littrell
The main strength of this book is in the late Professor Miller's Introduction which is lucid and insightful in identifying and placing Patanjali's Yoga Sutras for the general reader. The weakness is in Miller's use of certain non-yogic and sometimes misleading terms in her translation, usage which stems from her position as an academic of yoga and not a practitioner. Sometimes she translates words that probably should not be translated since there are no real English equivalents--for example, "samadhi" itself. And sometimes she uses what I would consider not the most agreeable English equivalent.

Her use of the word "spirit" in the third aphorism is an example: "When thought ceases, the spirit stands in its true identity as observer to the world." The Sanskrit word she is translating is "drashtri" which is usually "seer" although it can also mean "soul," according to B.K.S. Iyengar. When one reads the next aphorism, "Otherwise, the observer [seer] identifies with the turnings of thought" it becomes clear that the seer is not spirit; indeed "spirit" is a confusing word in this context since it has no clear cognate in the dualistic yoga philosophy. The closest equivalent would be "purusha" but that would be inappropriate since that refers to the entire non-material consciousness (as opposed to "prakriti," which is what is manifested). Perhaps I should simply say that "soul" in yogic philosophy is not the same thing as "spirit."

Another example would be her translation of vairagya in I.15 as "dispassion" which is technically correct but misses the larger meaning of the non-attachment that comes from renunciation, which is the point of the aphorism.

I could also quibble with her use of the word "contemplation" as the equivalent of the Sanskrit "samadhi." But it is really impossible to translate the last three limbs of yoga: dharana, dhyana, and samadhi into English, and the contemporary practice is to simply use the Sanskrit terms themselves. And, at any rate, there is considerable controversy about the experience of these states. Miller follows the established practice of rendering them respectively as concentration, meditation, and contemplation. Yet it is clear that samadhi, especially "nirbija samadhi" or seedless samadhi, is beyond contemplation. Georg Feuerstein actually defines samadhi as "ecstasy."

Another strength of the book is the translation itself--once one puts aside the quibbles about some of the terms and looks at the forest, as it were, of the entire expression. Miller has worked hard to make the text readily accessible to the general reader by using familiar terms in familiar sentence structures. She also groups several related aphorisms together and comments on them as a whole, giving each group a title. For example, aphorisms I.17 - I.22 are labeled, "Ways of Stopping Thought." This organization works well in helping the reader to a good overall understanding of Patanjali with only a first reading. Miller has not simplified the text or dumbed it down in any sense. What she has done is to give the pithy statements a sort of liquidity that makes for easy reading.

Her subtitle: "Discipline of Freedom" is an apt description of Patanjali's yoga in the sense that this yoga employs technique and practice to reach liberation whereas other yogas might employ faith and devotion, selfless service, or knowledge as ways to transcend this earthly existence.

I would recommend that this text be studied in conjunction with Iyengar's Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (1993) since that book contains a more detailed exposition of Patanjali's text and has more extensive commentaries.

--Dennis Littrell, author of "Yoga: Sacred and Profane (Beyond Hatha Yoga)"

Timeless wisdom made available to the modern reader
By A Customer
The *Yoga Sutras* is an ancient Indian text attributed to the sage Patanjali. They discuss "yoga" in the deep spiritual sense-- not the physical exercises of Hatha Yoga, but the essential techniques of stilling the mind and achieving spiritual illumination. The objective, almost scientific, treatment of *Yoga Sutras* presents the reader with an anatomy of consciousness itself, as well as an atlas of the highest human possibilities. Prof. Miller's translations make this esoteric text readily available to the modern reader. Her translation is lucid and easy to read, without sacrificing any of the wisdom or precision of the text itself. I would recommend this book to any one who takes seriously the idea of spiritual work and the goal of spiritual transformation.

From the exciting and provocative writer of Tampa, a poignant, riotously funny story of how far some will go for love—and how far some will go to escape it.

Hazel has just moved into a trailer park of senior citizens, with her father and Diane—his extremely lifelike sex doll—as her roommates. Life with Hazel’s father is strained at best, but her only alternative seems even bleaker. She’s just run out on her marriage to Byron Gogol, CEO and founder of Gogol Industries, a monolithic corporation hell-bent on making its products and technologies indispensable in daily life. For over a decade, Hazel put up with being veritably quarantined by Byron in the family compound, her every movement and vital sign tracked. But when he demands to wirelessly connect the two of them via brain chips in a first-ever human “mind-meld,” Hazel decides what was once merely irritating has become unbearable. The world she escapes into is a far cry from the dry and clinical bubble she’s been living in, a world populated with a whole host of deviant oddballs.

As Hazel tries to carve out a new life for herself in this uncharted territory, Byron is using the most sophisticated tools at his disposal to find her and bring her home. His threats become more and more sinister, and Hazel is forced to take drastic measures in order to find a home of her own and free herself from Byron’s virtual clutches once and for all. Perceptive and compulsively readable, Made for Love is at once an absurd, raunchy comedy and a dazzling, profound meditation marriage, monogamy, and family.

Review
“Nutting deftly exploits the comic potential of perverse attachments... The novel charms in its witty portrait of a woman desperate to reconnect with her humanity.” (Publishers Weekly, ’Best Summer Books of 2017’)

“So blisteringly smart and feverishly inventive that it’s difficult to decide which element pins most precisely the absurdity of our present or the terror of our future. This is a novel as frightening as it is hilarious, melding pathos, comedy, and delight as only great satire can.” (Garth Greenwell, author of What Belongs to You)

“Alissa Nutting’s Made for Love is bizarre and vivid and unexpected and wickedly funny. I promise you will enjoy the ride.” (Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins)

“There is no one who negotiates the absurd as vigorously yet poignantly as Nutting. In her second novel…there are sex dolls and a senior citizen trailer park and brain chips and a con man who loves dolphins and still, the story makes sense like a motherfucker. Brilliant, dense, hilarious writing.” (Roxane Gay)

“Oh god I just love every page. It’s fantastic.” (Lynda Barry, author of One! Hundred! Demons! and The Good Times Are Killing Me)

“Alissa Nutting is one of the most daring writers in America. She has the courage and recklessness to look our crazy culture in the eye, laughing as the headlights bear down upon her. This book is hilarious, and deeply sad, and hilarious.” (Dan Chaon, author of Ill Will)

“Made for Love will be one of the funniest, most absurd books you’ll read this summer....Hilarious, clever, and strikingly original, Made for Love speaks to the absurdity of our societal obsessions with technology and wealth.” (Buzzfeed)

“A sly satire of our tech- and prosperity-obsessed society.” (Booklist)

“As absurd and hilarious as it is poignant.” (Cosmopolitan, “11 Books You Won’t Be Able to Put Down This Summer”)

“Embrace the absurdity in this bonkers romp.” (Cosmopolitan)

Sex with dolphins, inflatables and techno mind melds....oh, my!
By Laurence R. Bachmann
Can you imagine? Hopefully not. No worries--Alissa Nutting has you covered. It’s a novel called Made for Love, a sardonic, sometimes hilarious and occasionally provocative look at America. Apparently, we’re not so much hurtling toward dystopia as drowning in self-absorption, disfunction, and a condition best described as techno-detached syndrome.

Pity the schlub married to a mogul named Gogol. That would be Hazel, on the lam from husband Byron, a Steve Jobs-like inimical figure determined to achieve global domination in a ‘Pinky and The Brain’ sort of way. The final straw to send Hazel scurrying is Byron’s suggestion they install brain implant chips linking their thoughts and interior lives. Byron doesn’t like to be disappointed and Hazel can’t afford to let him know what she really thinks. He’d kill her. Literally.

Then there's Jasper--gigolo and con man who bears an uncanny resemblance to a sexy, European Jesus. Apparently, Christ would have been a babe magnet in Boca, until he gets an urge to be more than just Flipper's friend;)) The remainder of Made For Love is a seriously silly look at our current cultural condition, dependence on technology, and a willingness to use people as though they were commodities. For the Jaspers and Byrons it's a rush and it becomes addictive. Sharp insight is tempered with great humor-- Byron’s state-of-the-art crapper elevates even "nature's call." By 2018 apparently even our dumps will be a cinematic experience if you "really, really believe[d] in money."

Nutting has a great voice and an eye for the numbing and dehumanizing rote of gadgets and modernity. Technology, of course, is just a symptom, not the cause of problems. Tech toys detach us from each other (why bother to converse if you can be immortalized in a meme)...dying mothers would rather have a bucket list bang with a neighbor than spend last weeks with her family. Happily or tragically--pick your POV--Dad and daughter don’t really mind. Dad’s replacement is an android like inflatable named Diane—father and daughter review her perky rack over a six pack. Life’s Kodak moments.

Order a hardcover copy of Made For Love (not the ebook) if only so you put your phone, kindle or computer down for the hours it takes to read it and enjoy. You’ll be amazed at the fun you can have, the emotions (and pages) that can be felt getting lost in a good book.

A delightfully odd trip from the opening sentence to the final page
By Jessica Weil
I've been looking forward to this book all year and it did not disappoint. Alissa Nutting is a genius of the absurd, hilarious and straight up bizarre; she takes a sledgehammer to societal norms and never shies away from uncomfortable taboos.

At 35 years old, Hazel abruptly leaves her psychologically abusive husband Byron Gogol, the multi-millionaire CEO of a monolithic tech company not entirely unlike (you guessed it) Google. With nowhere else to go, she moves in with her septuagenarian father and his newly acquired sex doll—a better alternative than staying with Byron, who has threatened to take control of her entire mind as part of an innovative new experiment.

Meanwhile, a handsome conman named Jasper, who relies on his Jesus-like appearance to scam wealthy women into falling in love with him, has a near-death experience in the ocean one night and from that point forward can only be sexually aroused by dolphins. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

With Byron spying on her move and threatening to harm her loved ones, Hazel grows increasingly desperate to escape his grasp for good. Ultimately Hazel and Jasper's storylines intersect in a surprising but strangely logical way, and it turns out they may be able to save each other.

Made for Love is an delightfully odd trip from the opening sentence to the final page. Nutting's unrelenting strangeness and deviance isn't for everyone, but it is certainly for me. I ate up every last word. Beneath the entertaining absurdity is smart commentary on the intersection between technology and human connection, and a poignant dismantling of the cultural norms we come to expect from stories about love and relationships.

Totally demented and perfectly lovely.
By Kathy B
This story is totally demented and perfectly lovely. I'm amazed at how the author made me feel such empathy for two seemingly unlovable protagonists. It even helped me forgive my own shortcomings - a bit.

And - it's a real hoot! Can't wait to read more by this author.

The weight of the paper is gone!!!
By Brynnie
Organizing Paper @ Home: What to Toss and How to Find the Rest!

I have always been overwhelmed by the massive stacks of paper and unopened mail at my house! I'm a clean/organized person in general but paper has always been a problem for me. I sometimes can be a procrastinator and the paper in my house definitely is the biggest sign of that. I always have these wishy-washy thoughts about "well... what if I need this for this... or "I'll get to it when I have time..." and have put this off for YEARS... and dreaded it!!! I have had loose systems in place for home/office organization, but nothing standard/anything I've regularly committed to.

"Organizing Paper @ Home" has answered all of those questions for me... how to decide what to keep and what to toss... what to do with emails and calenders and home office organization...... and after only a few days (straight) of implementing the systems in this book I feel SO MUCH BETTER in general about life... more in control and honestly I feel more peace of mind knowing that I have attacked the mounds of paper and I now know how to manage and organize the constant flow of paper that will continue to come for the foreseeable future. I must also say that I have known about this book for many months now and put off buying it knowing I had so much work to do... but shredding an entire combo recycling bin full of paper felt SO DARN GOOD!!! It was therapeutic actually!

Thank you to the authors Barbara & Jennifer! I will gladly recommend this book to everyone I know!

At war with clutter?
By Mike Mastracci
Many years ago, maybe 12 or more, I attended a seminar and The Paper Tiger was one of the products mentioned. Since I am unorganized by nature and have "follow-through" issues, I bought it. I fell in love with the system as it made so much sense. It was like having a mini google machine that could organize your life's stuff in a way that works for you. I sprung for the 8 hour miracle and had the paper Tiger Lady herself, Barbara Hemphill, come to my house so I could jump right in and use the Paper Tiger to its potential. It was awesome and Barbara couldn't be nicer, more professional and helpful; a lovely person. Now, I wish I could say it changed my life forever, but that would be disingenuous. I fell back into old habits; not their fault, but mine, and I strayed away from a good thing. However, now I am back in the organizational groove, and when I saw this book I bought it without a moment's hesitation. I am pleased to report that it has re-inspired me and I have declared "War on Clutter" and with General Barbara Hemphill and the Paper Tiger to guide me, there will be no letting up this time. Anything associated with Barbara Hemphill and/or Paper Tiger is well, well, well worth the small investment.

Didn't Work for Me
By Linda
Amidst all of the 4- and 5-star reviews, I apparently am the lone dissenter. I've been looking for ways to help me organize my papers and my electronic files, and I was hoping this book was it. It was not.

The chapter that dealt with organizing papers was very high-level. For example, the authors state something to the effect of "You can use colored tabs and folders to separate categories." Really? They did not recommend this approach (which I agree with), but I was really looking for a slew of different approaches that would allow me to pick the one that would work best for me. As for organizing electronic files, the gist was, "You can organize your electronic files the same way that you do your paper files." Hmmm...

I will say that I liked the tone and writing style of the authors, so it was an easy read. As for the content, I'm far less impressed and definitely do not think this book is worth the $10 price tag that I paid for it.
