At an early age Reiniger discovered the Chinese art of silhouette puppetry, and made her first silhouettes for a school performance. Growing up during the early years of cinema, she fell in love with the films of Georges M�li�s and Paul Wegener, and found imaginative ways to adapt the craft of silhouette-making and shadow puppetry to the possibilities of animation. Reiniger elicited marvelous effects of motion from the inflexibility of silhouettes, and even introduced cultural quotations from the works of Charlie Chaplin or Josephine Baker into her magical films. Today she is best remembered for the animation masterpiece The Adventures of Prince Achmed. This book--the first on Reiniger in English--reproduces three of her most beautiful silhouette series: versions of Mozart’s Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro, and an animal alphabet.

For the curious about shadow puppetry and its early beginnings in film

A very unusual book of how this remarkable book was printed.
It reveals the early work of this gifted cinematographer who used cutouts/shadow puppets to reveal a story. The book is not large but the early premise is the thought of what progressed into a new form of film. I was fascinated, intrigued and totally delighted about how it came about and would recommend this book highly. It is thin but valuable in its research. Some would say they were cheated for this book is not for everyone but if you are interested in shadow film or shadow puppetry you can understand the amount of creative inventiveness this woman had. tnt

Gorgeous book for silhouette fans! A little pricey, but wow, what a beautiful book. Lotte Reiniger remains the queen of silhouette animation, and these stills are stunning!

About the Author
Matthew Morris has worked with the Oracle database since 1996 when he worked in the RDBMS support team for Oracle Support Services. Employed by Oracle for over eleven years in support and development positions, Matthew was an early adopter of the Oracle Certified Professional program. He was one of the first one hundred Oracle Certified Database Administrators (version 7.3) and was also in the first hundred to become an Oracle Certified Forms Developer. In the years since, he has upgraded his Database Administrator certification for releases 8i, 9i, 10G and 11G, and added the Application Express Expert and the Oracle SQL Expert certifications. Outside of Oracle, he has CompTIA certifications in Linux+ and Security+.

Another Excellent Oracle Exam guide....

I bought this book as an aid to review for the 11G Administration 1 exam... I loved it... Every word, every page, excellent. Well thought out well presented...Very useful and most importantly easy to digest....Everything in this book, is "stuff" that a fledgling Oracle DBA (folks like us who are taking this exam!) should know and understand...and it is presented to you (the reader) about as simply as anybody can possbily put it... As I said in my review of Mr. Morris's 1Z0-047 book, I can't speak for other peoples expectations or motivations...but I am absolutely FLOORED how anybody (who actually studies Oracle Database and/or takes these exams!) would have anything bad to say about his books. This book is EXCELLENT for what it is supposed to be (knowledge review). It is worth every penny and very highly recommended... Further,, I personally appreciate the time and effort the author has clearly put into making this information available. Let's face it... this is very technical Oracle Database knowledge...It's complicated and involved....and there aren't alot of people lining up to explain this stuff to the masses....let alone as well as this author does.. kudos again Mr. Morris!

Engineering Thermodynamics 3rd edition.

I bought the 3rd edition 1979 reprint of this book. I have been using it for a self study of Thermodynamics. I had noticed many newer books reference this book.
Unfortunately, there seems to be several math errors through the book. Especially in the self-study questions at the end of each chapter. I have checked some of the math with other people and they agreed. For one example you can look here: [...]
The book could additionally use some better pictures and explanation of some of the vocab. A picture is worth a 1000 words.
The books good points are that it has a good introduction of units. Meaning different measuring systems. It really shows what different units mean. I may continue to use the book, but if the math errors keep up I may abandon it.

Well written but for biologists

Because I do biostatistics for a living and it has been decades since my last formal biology class, I got this book to help me understand the biology of modern high-throughput genomics research. I am impressed with the writing. The author's presentation of history and the framing of ethical issues could not be better. Unfortunately for people like me the author assumes that you have a background in molecular cellular biology. Many terms are not defined or defined long after they first appear. Because the writing is excellent you can usually read through the sections with undefined terms with the help of the web but it is a slow difficult read. The index is good but there is no glossary. The web support for the book is fair (with expanded graphics and answers to some problems) but not really great. There are questions that are supposed to be answered using the web (like how the field has grown since the book was published) but the publisher does not provide hyperlinks to support those questions. With a glossary for non-biologists and better web support this would be an ideal book for everyone interested in the field. Without those features, it is still very good.

Best introduction to genomics

The book takes the reader gently through the intricacies of genomics. It is a easy read for the computer scientist with little background in Bio-chemistry. The genetic material is always introduced and illustrated with examples before its importance in the scheme of things is explained. I highly recommend this book.

Not very pedagogical

As a newcomer to the biological sciences, I found this book not to be very pedagogical. From the very beginning, it assumes too much knowledge to be really self-contained - I was forced to Google terms (like Alu, an important transposable element in the human genome) that were left undefined from almost the very first page. And it's not that the level is uniformly too high for me, as it rehashes things like the central dogma of biology that are familiar from grade school. The purpose in this age of buying a paper book is to have something self-contained enough to avoid having to go down a long bunny hole of Internet searching. I found the uneven assumed background to be disappointing.

Its pages are full of colorful boxes containing relatively unhelpful summaries of the main text and over-numerous digressions. But there's enough new material in these boxes to make them necessary for understanding subsequent text, so you can't skip them. Thrashing between the text and these boxes slows me down. Many of the illustrations are non-essential photographs or poorly cropped screenshots. It suffers from many of the sins of bad K-12 textbooks, but given the harder material, it's even more painful to read.

That said, it covers a lot of useful material.

One of the most intriguing questions facing modern science is the inner workings of the human brain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful tool used to study the human brain in action. The data produced from mapping the active processes within the brain present many challenges to statisticians, computer scientists, engineers and other data analysts, due to their complex structure and the ever-increasing sophistication of the scientific questions being posed by researchers. This book represents the first in-depth discussion of statistical methodology, which it couples with an introduction to the scientific background needed to understand the data.

Starting from the basic science - where fMRI data come from, why they are so complicated, and the role statistics can play in designing and interpreting experiments - the book gives a detailed survey of the numerous methods that have been applied in the last fifteen years. The analysis of fMRI data features many of the major issues of concern in modern statistics, such as high dimensionality, multiple testing, and visualization. The array of techniques examined in the book ranges from the simple two-sample t-test and the general linear model to hierarchical spatiotemporal models, multivariate methods such as principal components analysis, and Bayesian approaches as they have been used in fMRI. Software, including descriptions of the most popular freeware packages and their capabilities, is also discussed. This book offers researchers who are interested in the analysis of fMRI data a detailed discussion from a statistical perspective that covers the entire process from data collection to the graphical presentation of results.
