A treasure trove of Cowboys insider information.

I have been a Cowboys fan since 1978, when I was 6. I have read about 5 Cowboys books in my life, but this one is the most explosive. Skip Bayless is certainly biased here, but the amount of dirt he dishes up on the Boys' is incredible. A must read for any serious cowboys fan.

the good and the bad

This book was written after the Cowboys won the Super Bowl in 1992. It tells some of the behind scenes goings on between Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson who publicly looked like they were building a Super team. And had a perfect owner coach relationship. But privately were butting heads. Of course after their second Super Bowl the next year was when everything came apart. This is a good book. I know the author Skip Bayless wrote for The Dallas newspaper. But I dont think he was as close to the team as he wants you to think. But the thing with this team is as great as it was. You cant help but wonder what might have been.

This book has been widely panned as being highly embellished. Skip doesn't have real inside info about the cowboys. There are plenty of other books that are better about the cowboys

Highly Recommended, despite minor shortcomings

I really enjoyed the second book in this series... I still have the same gripes with the series in general (a little bit too stereotypical, and the "Big Surprise" at the end of the last book you see coming from book one... even though the otherwise very intelligent characters seem to be complete idiots when it comes to the big question of the book)

With that said, there is some GREAT writing in here... fantastic character development, excellent dialogue, riveting action scenes. The 'magic' system is interesting. Unusual and not as gripping and/or fantastic as others, but he does well with what he's created.

All in all, I'm excited about Patrick Carr and what he's done here, and what is to come in the future! The whole Staff and Sword series is well worth reading.

You can't help but love the characters and the world they live in

Patrick Carr has truly done a magnificent job with this story, the second in the series Staff and the Sword. You can't help but love the characters and the world they live in.

I love it when you can see the characters still developing in the sequel. How they grow, how they cope with situations, and how they help each other's growth is fascinating when Carr writes. I wish every first time author would read this guy's work and analyze it so they could do as well with their characters. Story isn't all driven by characters, but a goodly part is. The characters dig into each situation with surprising tenacity, and you find yourself caring about some of the craziest characters.

We pick up where the last one left off, only Errol is on trial. He's still in love with the princess and she is in love with him. So much in love that she follows him on his mission. Overwhelming odds that should crush him as he faces some of the most fierce warriors in the arena. But, he has learned how to fight with double swords. Earl Errol is such a great warrior, but hates the killing.

If you liked the first one, you love the second!

Just as good as book 1!

Again, I had a hard time putting this book down. With this book I began to see the allegorical aspects of the story line which began in Book 1. I don't want to give any of the story away for those who haven't read it yet, but feel confident that you won't be disappointed should you take the time to read it. I felt like I was reading a movie and think this series would be an excellent candidate to be made into a motion picture. Now I'm on to Book 3.

This book is a rebuttal of the commonly-held view "that if one could but plumb the sources to their depths, there is no question to which the halakhah [Jewish law] cannot provide its definitive answer." (p. 61). In the course of this discussion, Roth addresses a variety of issues:

1) The difference between rules that are de-oraita (originating in the Torah) and de-rabbanan (invented by rabbis, usually as "fences" meant to prevent violates of de-oraita rules). Although some commentators assert that the former rules are interpreted more stringently, Roth points out that no consensus exists as to the boundaries of the two concepts.

2. The weight of precedent. Roth cites numerous examples of later scholars disagreeing with earlier scholars; even if the earlier scholars are greater, the later scholars benefit from a wider variety of sources. As one 15th-c. commentator pointed out, in case of a conflict between later and earlier scholars, "[we] should not decide in favor of the earlier [scholars], but rather should abide by the decision of the later ones, for they knew the words of the early ones better than we" (p. 366).

3. The ability of sages to ignore Torah rules under exceptional circumstances (mostly involving trade-offs between rules, e.g. allowing people to break oaths, thus violating one rule, in order to avoid violating other rules).

4. The weight of custom. Can custom supersede law? It depends on whether the custom contradicts the Torah or preserves it, on the clarity of the law, and on how venerable the custom is. (Given the heavy weight of custom in Jewish communities today and the blurry lines between custom and law, I wish Roth had discussed this issue in more practical detail).

5. Sages' common use of science, sociology and psychology to change halakha. For example, it had once been the norm that one should wash between eating meat and fish because eating them together is medically dangerous. As science advanced, halakhists learned that this danger was nonexistent, and a later commentator rejected the rule.

Roth emphasizes a key limit to this principle: even if the original reason for a rule is no longer valid, the rule should be upheld if other reasons support it.

6. The role of new legal sources. If scholars become aware of sources that they were not aware of in the past, they may rule differently today.

Occasionally, Roth fails to address issues that are worth discussing (e.g. whether a custom stops being binding due to disuse, and how much disuse is required). Also, he should have created a glossary to give a handier guide to the many foreign words he uses (not just Hebrew words, but even German!)

Informative, Unbiased Guide To DMT

I've always been afraid of experimenting with psychodelics. About the furthest I've gone into the drug world is marijuana. With that being said I've always been really curious about different psychodelic drugs including DMT. I'd seen the rave reviews of Colin Willis's other works, and when I came across this book, I thought I'd give it a read to indulge my curiousity.
DMT, also known as Demethyltryptamine is a drug used to put you in a subconcious/concious state. Similar to acid, shrooms, and other psycodelic drugs out there. This book begins by explaining what the drug is and all basic facts associated with DMT. It then delves deeper into the history of DMT, talking about it's discovery and historical studies. There's also a good portion of the book dedicated to the science behind the drug; which I found very interesting, because most online sources I'd found regarding DMT don't really mention the science behind it. In fact almost all pieces that I've read on DMT were more about the feelings and effects related to it, rather than the science behind those effects. So this book opened up a lot more information for me.

As with most pieces about DMT this book also covers all of the effects of DMT. But, unlike many sources it doesn't purely focus on the positive attributes, it also explains in detail the negatives of DMT. Because the book was written in a way that was neither promoting nor demeaning DMT, I found that almost everything within it had a scientific base behind it and was written in a way very general way. It wasn't trying to persuade you to use the drug, or not to use it- it was just informing you on using it. I really trusted all of the information in the book because of this and I especially appreciated the fact that they spoke in detail about BOTH the positives and negatives of the drug.

Aside from the effects, the book also discusses the legal risks behind the drug and the dangers involved. There is a lot of critical information included in the book that really can help you grasp whether or not the use of DMT is something worth doing for you. I also really like that it quickly discussed the cost of DMT, which was something I had no previous knowledge of and is hard to find clear answers to online.

Overall, a very informative read. I still haven't decided if I'd ever like to try psycodelics, but I do know that I have a lot more information to make an intelligent decision with after reading this book.

should be used as a teaching tool

I've found this 28 page book to be very informative. It has all the information you could ask for about DMT. I've never tried it or even thought about trying it but this book has explained everything. I know the effects it has on the body and most of the side effects. I'm really happy this book was written. It should be standard in all high school health classes so kids can know sooner. This book was well written. I ugly recommend this book!

Warning...Book contains fear-mongering hogwash.

Interesting that the only good reviews are by people who are admittedly uneducated about DMT. As someone who's well educated in the fields and topics of ethnobotanicals, entheogens, psychedelics, pharmacology, mental health, and more, I give it one star.
I got this pamphlet on Kindle, and I must say that there's some good information in this book, although there's a TON of conjecture, pseudoscience, and frankly insulting hogwash. If you'd like to learn more about DMT please seek out books like 'DMT: The Spirit Molecule' by Dr. Rick Strassman, or books by the brothers McKenna (Terence and Dennis.)
For one example of why this book is 'so' bad in my opinion, I will quote a few sentences that put the scope of how much research the author did before writing this...
"Users who have indiscriminately used DMT have been known to cause harm to others and to themselves. In such cases, there is a likelihood of suicide."
This angers me to an almost irrational extent. Not only have DMT users NOT been "known" to do these things, but it's purely incorrect and fabricated information. The simple fact that "indiscriminate" dosing of DMT would, and will, leave the user incapable of perceiving that they're even still part of this world, but they'd likely be fully physically incapacitated, slumped over and incapable using any of their skeletal muscles to do this supposed "harm" to themselves or others. Suicide would be impossible and out of the question with a sufficient dose, not to mention these so called "indiscriminate" dosages.
Not only is this bad information, but it's fear-mongering. This exact "harm and suicide" line of propaganda is what was used to discredit and destroy the reputation of LSD so many years ago--lies it still hasn't recovered from despite its uses for psychotherapy and much more. Psychedelics can be both medicinal substances and spiritual sacraments, and the way the author has neglected to do any real research and instead decided to take the old fear tactic approach in parts of his pamphlet, simply changing the subject of the myth from LSD to DMT, is offensive and unscientific, and I think that one line is enough to inform anyone about how seriously this author should be taken.

This was free for me to read, and I still feel like it was a waste. I'm so tired of these vapid cash-grab "books," lacking the scientific truth surrounding the issues they claim to address.

I feel so bad for the poor teenagers who's parents are punishing them based on the incorrect and inflammatory false information they're reading in these gross little cookie-cutter publications... UGH.

Being an avid "Franklinite," the flame of my interest in the mystery of the Erebus and Terror was fanned after the wreck of the Erebus was found in the Arctic last year after almost 170 years. Kristina Gehrmann has researched very well into the doomed expedition and her drawings not only show excellent detail and are well executed, but are also quite adorable. The storyline is of course fictional, since we don't know exactly what may have happened, but nonetheless it is believable as one of many theories. I'm eagerly awaiting the second book in the series.
