About the Author
Paul Taylor received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh, and is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Phonetic Arts Ltd. He has previously been Lecturer and Director in the Centre for Speech Technology Research at the University of Edinburgh, a visiting lecturer at the University of Cambridge, and was founder and Chief Technical Officer of Rhetorical Systems.

everything you need to know about speech synthesis

This book is an excellent introduction to all aspects of speech synthesis. It tells you everything you need to know, with ample discussion as to why you need to know it. There's also plenty of material suitable for readers already familiar with the subject who are interested in more advanced discussions. The discussion of HMM-based synthesis is a good example of this - the text is a good accompaniment to the current literature. There's also a very good introduction to speech signal processing, particularly for students with a good math background but who haven't yet studied DSP.

This book is one of the core texts for the Cambridge MPhil in Computer Speech, Text and Internet Technology. By all accounts, students have found the material very helpful and interesting. I recommend it highly.

Very thorough and easy to understand.

This was my first book on TTS, and I couldn't be happier with it. It makes me want to study the field further, in that it was presented in a way that was easy to understand for someone with little or no previous knowledge about TTS. I would highly recommend it.

Liliana Hart spent five years teaching music in the public education system. Short, fast paced and suspense filled romance

After devouring Dirty Little Secrets, I decided to try out more of Liliana Hart's short novels. I say short because they're all around 200 pages. She is clearly a diverse writer and I enjoyed this romantic suspense. It is very likely this is a first in a series surrounding the lives of a team of ex-marines and the introduction to these honorable and loyal friends is a great start.

Ex-marine sniper, ex-FBI, and current security specialist, Shane Quincy has trouble sleeping. After the events of a take down gone terribly wrong, he lost his beloved wife. He runs in the middle of the night to shake the nightmares off, but after his latest run, he returns to find his apartment building on fire. There's only one other occupant on the third floor where the source of the flames are and he runs to her rooms to find Rachel Valentine handcuffed to her bed. He ends up rescuing Rachel, but as she tries to evade his questions, he knows she's in over her head. It turns out that she is the only living daughter of a mob boss who's recently disappeared and her uncle is gunning to have her killed. Having been with the FBI, Shane is all too familiar with her family and what they're capable of and helps her in her mission to obtain evidence left to her by her father and turn state's witness to take out some very powerful and dangerous families.

The action is pretty non stop with a good mix of bonding and sharing for the amount of time these two are together. The romance is not as steamy as I prefer but it works and the secondary characters are interesting and dynamic. Romantic suspense in general is pretty formulaic so you have a sense of what's going to happen, but this particular journey is not without its twists and turns. I would definitely read future installments if there is a price adjustment in the future. I have to say I'm rather surprised that this book was $3.99 for a 2650 location kindle book (The rest of the pages are previews to her other books). It really should be .99 or 1.99 at the most.

Can't recommend. I'm so tired of this character combination.

Take one unpleasant, extremely rude and ungrateful woman, whose sole virtue is being (of course) incredibly beautiful.

Add one hot, sexy, tall ripped man with a haunting military background and a great need to protect. Then stir in terrible taste in women.

Fling these two together in a fire and bake til very overdone.

I just couldn't stand it. A man risks his life to save you and you snap at him for calling you "sugar"? While the fire is burning and you could both die?

If I was trying to save this little beast and she snapped "I'm not your sugar!" I would have told her, "You're right! See ya!" and saved myself. Let her figure it out.

A few minutes later, the man who rescued her offers his hand to introduce himself and she "looks at it as if it's poisonous." She says, "I suppose I should thank you for saying my life." Yes, I suppose you should! And stop being such an ungrateful turd too!

She's totally awful, I don't care why, and he's a total schmuck for being so entranced by her amazing beauty that he wants desperately to save and protect her despite her utterly vile personality.

Authors, please stop. Women can be tough, angry, even damaged, and still behave like decent human beings. They don't all have to be heart-stoppingly beautiful. They can behave like rational adults and not little brats.

Men can be strong without being totally gorgeous and buff and they can be attracted to women for reasons other than their hair, eyes and bodies. They can find bad behavior repellant, even if the woman is gorgeous.

Please, authors, fight the stereotypes and give us people we can like and admire, characters that may be flawed but still try hard to be good human beings. Women don't have to be either weak or harpies. Men don't have to be mighty protectors who only value women for their looks.

We, your readers, deserve better.

Liked this book, good ending and good characters

Liliana Hart -- I don't think I have read any of her other works, but I enjoyed this read.
The characters had depth and emotion, and were spicy at times. The story line had a good flow
and kept me reading to find out what would happen next. I try not to do spoilers, but you've
probably figured out: guy gets girl . . . or is it, girl gets guy? Read this one. I think you'll
enjoy the story. I know I did.

This is a good book that touches on a lot of topics related to a company. Its interested to learn how we each give off signals in the work place and how they may affect performance. It talks about email versus face to face communication, leadership and overall emotional intelligence. Easy read for best understanding.

NOT HELPFULL FROM A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE

This book is so poorly written that if the professor relies solely on the book, the student will have no clue what on earth is going on, this is what I am experiencing now. The author could have done a better job dumbing it down so that a layman could understand it. One would need an intro class for this book alone before he/she would actually be able to understand some of the theories, due mainly to authors pretentiousness.

Tome essential to all theatre artists

Studying Artaud is one way of taking a deep dive off into the realm of the unknown. His struggle to fully comprehend and describe lucidly his thought process and the clockwork of his soul; his obsessive desire and drive to break beyond the mundane level of median psycological theatre to rediscover the fiery roots and potent magic of the theatre event; and his visionary words---all of these combine to give us a man who was deep, profound and troubled---hence, utterly human, and truly inspirational to any theatre artist or artist in general. This translation of some of his most essential writings is essential to anyone who wishes to study the avant garde theatre. His influence is at times lucid and clearly defined; at other times, one sees that the myth of Artaud has distorted what the actual man wanted and worked for. In dealing with any artist who has created such a controversy (in his own time as well as in our time), one has to approach his work with the discipline of a tightrope walker. And Sontag's work provides the researcher with a straight, keen and powerful translation. Among the other translations of Artaud, this one is the best anthology available for the experienced researcher and the burning initiate. Read it as an athlete of the heart.

Artaud: what and where and how were you thinking?

Selected Writings isn't an easy read. I jumped around a lot. This stuff is the most intense stuff I've ever come across. Artaud is one of the most important writers to rationalise beyond logic. His ideas on Van Gogh prove, beyond doubt, that his sense of aesthetics was far more acute than his contemporaries. They always said weird stuff about Neitszche, how he was more 'in touch with himself' than other writers or, indeed, society at large. But Artaud explodes that idea, since he continually toys with his own sense of himself to the extreme. Reading Artaud for prolonged periods is like going beyond this (his) sense of self to another place, something completely new and agonizing. His ideas abouty the theatre are quite well established but there is other stuff here. The poems, monologues and just the sheer variety of 'inner scenarios' at play here really astounds you. 'To have done with the judgement of God' must be the most extreme form of self expressed mental torture around! (incidentally, am I correct in thinking there is a recording of this piece knockin' around?) Anyways, please take a slice of the insanity, you never know where it will lead you...

Andrey Akinshin has a PhD in computer science, and he received a Microsoft MVP award in 2015. He works as a lead .NET Developer at Perpetuum Software and as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Weizmann Institute of Science. He is also the author and main contributor of the Knockout MVC library and has a wealth of experience in Knockout.js. He has experience in various IT areas, from competitive programming (silver medal at ACM ICPC 2009) to teaching (senior lecturer and the school coach of competitive programming and mathematics teams). Great book for .NET developers to learn Knockout

First and foremost, it makes sense to create a book that discusses the collaboration of .NET with Knockout. It has been a very poorly-kept secret that there is a relationship between these two technologies, owing in large part to the fact that Knockout was a personal project of a Microsoft employee. So I am happy that this book exists among the fairly small number of Knockout books.

As for the format of the book, I enjoyed it. It begins with a deep dive into the features of Knockout, and this is needed. While I have always applauded the interactive tutorial on Knockout's site, anyone going through it would be forgiven for thinking that Knockout is a fairly simple data binding library and nothing more. But Knockout is much more than that, and a read of the first chapter is a roll call of what Knockout can do for you and how those features fit together. The next chapter brings .NET into the fold and begins a tutorial to create a Knockout/ASP.NET MVC application. About the only negative I could say here is that the author uses the Basic template from the batch of Visual Studio 2012 templates, thus using MVC 4 instead of 5. However, everything should still be applicable, and it was probably just a choice based on the Basic template being removed from MVC 5. The next chapter is another tutorial-styled section that introduces something I did not even know existed before seeing this book: Knockout MVC. This goes back to the relationship between .NET and Knockout that I mentioned before. Knockout MVC is a separate library for combining ASP.NET MVC with Knockout (technically a .NET wrapper for Knockout) which moves the data binding into the .NET side. You could write a fairly sophisticated Knockout app without a single line of Javascript. If you are writing a fairly by-the-numbers Knockout app, this could save a ton of time by leveraging your business logic on the server, but for the most part I don't think I will be using it. It was an interesting read, however. The final two proper chapters are essentially reference sections on "Advanced Features" of both Knockout and Knockout MVC (with a reference on KO MVC following those). Some may complain about the book falling out of the tutorial style for the final two chapters, but it does offer a nice laundry list of features while still keeping the page count low.

And that is an important thing to me and probably to others as well. One of the reasons I got this book was because of the specific subject matter and because of its length. I have found I just can't read a 500+ page book about a Javascript SPA framework. Rather, I would like to have a book that I can read in 2 days at the most and immediately become productive with. This is such a book, and Packt has, for me at least, become the publisher specializing in such books.

I highly recommend this book for any ASP.NET MVC developer who may have just been using some jQuery for the client-side who has interest in *quickly* picking-up a JS SPA framework.

A Great Beginners Guide

Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.

This is a great gift for anyone who has or wants to get a fish tank.

THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read.

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

Great book! Perfect for the beginner.

After a ten year break I decided to get back into aquarium keeping. I knew the basics but I was a little rusty on all the details. This book was a perfect refresher course on all of the intricacies of keeping a tropical aquarium - and I learnt a ton of new stuff too. I am setting up a 10 gallon quarantine tank (in my office) and a 29 gallon display tank (in the living room). I have followed this book page by page and a few weeks later my tanks are ready to accept fish - yes, I'm going shopping this weekend!

The author covers every aspect of setting up a new tank. Filters, lighting, substrate, food, you name it - it's all here. The explanation about the critical subject of water chemistry is the best I've read anywhere. There's also a ton of info about plants if you want to get into that side of things. He then goes on to recommend the most appropriate kinds of fish for each stage in the development of your new aquarium - all great information from someone who clearly knows what he's talking about.

The book itself is full color, with lots of graphs and charts to hold your interest. The photographs are excellent.

So, all in all, a great reference for the beginner. Highly recommended. Glad I bought it.
