Mandela, Speeches and Writings,1944-1990

This includes all the major speeches and writings of Nelson Mandela, from the formation of the ANC Youth League through his release. You can see in it Mandela's development from an African nationalist, suspicious of communism, and seeing little in common between Africans and the other oppressed peoples ("Coloureds" and Indians), much less whites, into an internationalist, strongly influenced by Marxism. It includes Mandela's testimony at his trials, in which he attempted to put the government on trial. It includes accounts of Mandela on Robben Island by two other prisoners. Then it has his correspondence with the government, requesting to meet and negotiate. Timing is everything: the South African Army had been beaten back from Angola (by combined Cuban, Angolan, and SWAPO forces), and forced to accept independence for Namibia. The mass movement had taken on the form of massive demonstrations and political strikes. In this context, approaching the government for negotiations was the correct move.

It includes the first four speeches Mandela gave upon his release, showing that his plan was not simply to negotiate, but to "intensify the struggle." This is quite important, since the movie version of Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, in contrast to Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela, makes it look like Mandela viewed the mass movement as an obstacle to negotiations. For those who want to follow up on the further speeches of Mandela in the struggle, I suggest Nelson Mandela Speaks: Forging a Democratic, Nonracial South Africa.

Classic essays and speeches

Lovers of good political writing will enjoy this. I was greatly inspired by the first edition of this while I was a college student in the 1980s (when Mr. Mandela was still imprisoned).

Among the highlights are "Bantu Education" (1950s), a look at how the educational system for Black South Africans was designed to produce a class of cheap labor (as a Black South Carolinian, I can relate). Mandela's court speech prior to his imprisonment in 1964 reads like a South African "I Have A Dream" as he eloquently states the case of Black S/Africans and his willingness to be a martyr for that cause. (Check the actual sound recording of this on the CD "The Voice of Nelson Mandela" for the full effect).

Later, we see the level of principle of Mr. Mandela as he spurns offers for freedom under the conditions set by the S/A government in the 80s. We also read his post-release speech as well as his calls for peace among warring factions in S/A.

Makes you wish for eloquent, principled, and effective leaders like this in America. At least it can inspire future generations toward that direction. By all means, read it.

Freedom struggle against apartheid -- Mandela's own words!

What a wonderful experience-- reading and studying speeches and documents prepared by Nelson Mandela during five decades of struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa! Here are key documents of the African National Congress, including the Freedom Charter that became the central document of the mass movement that brought down apartheid. Also Mandela's speeches at different stages of the struggle, including historic courtroom addresses when he was on trial for his life; documents Mandela prepared as the apartheid regime was forced to negotiate with him and the ANC in the late 1980s; and his first speeches after he was released from prison in 1990.
These speeches give a vivid reminder of the brutal, racist regime that was apartheid (and we should never forget that the South African regime was a pillar of U.S. domination in Africa from the 1940s on.) Mandela gives us a real feel for the determined, difficult, and courageous struggle of millions of people who never accepted submission to apartheid and the world-wide importance of the fight for a democratic, nonracial South Africa. And you see truly inspiring leadership in the persons of Mandela and his fellow leaders in the ANC.

Debunking every common investment wisdom

Ken Fisher debunks 50 items of popular common investment wisdom, often dispensed by other advisors. He covers, finance, sociology, politics, economics, concluding that little matters to market action.

It starts with a very shallow analysis of bond investment, neglecting ratings, term, or economic conditions to debunk the idea that bonds are safer than stocks. Sometimes they are. It would be just as easy to debunk the alternative thesis. Even his hated annuities have had their day and will again, though he's probably right on the indexed kind, which shouldn't be called annuities. Fisher forgets that there are no sure things, either positive or negative. Early on he says everything is a matter of probabilities, which he promptly forgets in his analysis of fundamentals. He attempts to debunk techniques like dollar cost averaging that serve a few disciplined investors very well. I wish I had been among them. Covered calls and other derivatives don't fit in Fisher's field of equities management and so must be no good.

He wants investors to ignore economic conditions and government policies such as inflation and wage rates. Many studies show inverse correlation between interest rates and stock prices as well as bonds. He denies the importance of consumerism that has driven markets for decades. He claims that natural disasters and terrorism don't scare the market, an easy point to make as it's occasionally right. The only exception to this indifferent attitude is a recognition of the importance of the global economy, which he reduces to foreign stocks.

He touches on banking regulations. There is ambivalent advice on “don't fight the Fed.” Most interesting for current conditions is that Fisher sees no market effect from a fed tightening operation. In fact the market reacts, sometimes violently, each time the Fed chairperson opens her mouth.

There is a bit of amateur psychology as he tries behavioral analysis, concluding that well rested investors are not better than tired ones and instructions on how to spot a fraudulent advisor.

He enters the political arena with national debt and trade deficit. You guessed it – no effect. Perhaps the political viewpoints seems myopic because Fisher is concerned only with stock valuation rather than the economic condition of the population at large.

There's little of instructional value here. Of course that wouldn't be good for business. The book is a self serving inducement to the unwary to invest under any and all conditions. The only conclusion to be drawn from this is that nothing matters to the stock market. That's the biggest bunk of them all.

You should read it to learn the heuristics

The authors Rechtin and Maier first address the discussion of Architecting vs Engineering. Interesting. In Part 1 they focus on 4 architecting methodologies: Normative (solution based), Rational (method based), Participative (stakeholder based) and Heuristic (lessons learned). It's good to stress the importance of lessons learned and best practices, although worst practices are very important too. But is a methodology based on Heuristics a methodology? Chapter 2 describes heuristics as tools and this chapter is good to read. Part two of the book, four domains to use Systems Architecting, offers new insights by showing how systems are architected in "builder architected systems" (making products), manufacturing systems, social systems and software systems. Especially the chapter on social systems is good. Remember to ask yourself the 4 who's (who benefits, who pays, who provides and who loses) because these parties influence the acceptance of your system. Part three of the book focusses on models, modelling methodologies and design progression. Chapter 10, written by Brenda Forman, describes the Political proces. In my opinion the best chapter of the book. Every architect, every consultant (whatever kind of consultant) should read this chapter. Terrific heuristics ("Proof is a matter of having the votes", "the best engineering solutions are not necessarily the best political solutions") and good examples on something that a lot of IT professionals don't like: politics. But, as the book suggests: "You may well find the craziness of the political process distasteful - but it will not go away!" You can use the lessons of this chapter every day. Finally, Appendix A lists a lot of heuristics you can use. Recommended reading.

Defining Architecting

Review: This is a great overview of the subject of systems architecture. It is already highly regarded in the systems engineering community. It is rich in useful detail. It gives a comprehensive historical view of the discipline. I found a large number of specific insights about the nature of architecture as opposed to engineering. The collection of over 180 heuristics is an interesting framework for the text. I can highly recommend it as a study to both novices and seasoned professionals. The guest chapters on political process and systems architecting (Brenda Forman), and The Professionalization of Systems Architecting (Elliot Axelbrand) are both valuable additions to the immense vocabulary of the authors.
If I have one quibble it is that the book correctly insists on quantification of performance attributes as the only proper basis for architecture, certification, and engineering. But it so often denies the measurability of so called `soft' values - and remarkably includes things like `safety', and `environmental impact' in that category. I fear that setting too high a standard for quantification leaves us with mere ambiguous words. This of course is a widespread problem. I disagree, and will take up the discussion with the authors and the community - as I already have done. In addition I find a complete lack of examples, or discussion, about how `multiple performance and cost attributes' can be used by the architectural level to understand the architectural problem. There are far too many non-quantified models, and far too little insight as to how a systems architect would deal with the quantified attribute requirements of a system. Maybe in the 3rd Edition?

If you need to invent systems, read this book.

This book addresses the rather neglected field of invention, specifically invention of systems. Whereas most books on systems address either formal analysis of an already invented system or the process for keeping track of system descriptive data (classical systems engineeringt), Maier and Rechtin address the really hard issues of how does one invent a system from scratch.

This book contains a general discussion of the process of invention of systems. Most importantly, the authors then tie this process description to a set of system invention / design rules that they refer to as heuristics. The heuristics are then discussed in some detail so as to improve the reader's interpretation and judgement in the use of these system invention / design rules.

Examples are very useful in any craft. The authors acknowledge this by providing some useful examples of the application of the system invention / design rules to a number of different system problems.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in or affected by artificial systems, whether they are technical, enviornmental, social, or other types of systems. Their clear presentation of a set of useful system invention / design rules together with a clear explaination of how to make practical use of these rules can assist any system architect in improving the level of maturity of his/her practice.

About the Author
Dr. William A. McEachern began teaching large sections of economic principles shortly after joining the University of Connecticut. Several years later he began offering teaching workshops around the country. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association conferred on him its Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He earlier won the Association's award for Distinguished Public Service. Dr. McEachern has published books and monographs on public finance, public policy, and industrial organization, including MANAGERIAL CONTROL AND PERFORMANCE (D.C. Heath and Company). His research has also appeared in edited volumes, such as READINGS IN PUBLIC CHOICE ECONOMICS (University of Michigan Press), INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON TEACHING AND LEARNING ECONOMICS (Edward Elgar Publishing), and RETHINKING ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES (Irwin Publishing), He has also published in a variety of refereed journals, including Economic Inquiry, National Tax Journal, Quarterly Review of Economic and Business, Journal of Industrial Economics, Kyklos, Econ Journal Watch, and Public Choice. His principles of economics textbooks have been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Bahasa Indonesia, and have been adapted for Australia and for India. Unacceptable Communication

VERY DISAPPOINTED. I made the purchase ...item was shipped...or so I thought...got a message 7 days AFTER expected delivery date that the book was out of stock. How could this be when it stated it was shipped. I spent money for the class...went to the library to subsidize the book and struggled for 20 days without this book...and I finally had to Drop the class. This puts me behind in my goal to obtaining my degree. Feeling like a failure dropping a class.

It's an access code not an actual paper book

I purchase this book for my ECON 2 class. I thought it was an actual paperback book but it was actually an access code. Either way i still used it to pass my class, but can be very deceiving. Either way a good read and a lot of information.

About the Author

Augie Hand had 30 years of hands-on experience in repairing and troubleshooting motors, followed by 15 years of giving seminars on the subject for electric motor repair shop technicians and in-house training for large industry maintenance technicians. He owned an electric motor repair shop for a number of years, and he taught the electric motor repair course at Southwestern Technical Institute. Hand is the co-author of Electric Motor Repair, considered the "Bible" of the industry.

Great source of info.

This book is a great addition to any tool box. We recently used it to identify 9 leads in a delta connected motor. With the method used here, we saved enough time (money) to cover the cost of the book!

The format with the questions and answers page numbers at the end of each chapter would make it quite useful in the class room, too.

Of course, the "safety tips" through out are useful to everyone.

As a previous owner of an Electric Motor Shop, I would recommend this book as a supplement for their 'Bible' for electric motor repairs. I would also recommend that anyone teaching this trade have this as a study guide for his students. It's tops for any problem solving of electric motors.
