The research and the huge amount of informative writing in this latest George Megalogenis book is presented in such an easily readable sale that you never feel - when will this end - I finished this book wanting more in fact. It has given me an insight into the very beginnings of 'European Settlement' (some would say 'invasion') and the varied ways in which each of the present States and Territories were settled by the constant arrivals of immigrants - not only from England and Ireland either. I had no idea of the mix of migrants that has come to make up what it is to be an 'Australian' today. Megalogenis makes a strong case for the benefits to Australia for ongoing migration as the way to develop a better and more prosperous country at a time when Australia is facing many challenges.

Nice idea for a topic, but I was disappointed that there was little economic data to back up the claims regarding how well or not Australia was going in this or that decade. If you take that away it's just politics, and Australia is very boring during its early colonized history.

George Megalogenis’s “Australia’s Second Chance” is a fascinating and insightful read. The author is a curious onlooker to the behaviour of the Australian economy and character. He is perceptive and produces a well structured argument.

“Australia’s Second Chance” is firstly a history of Australia from the time of the dispossession of the indigenous population to the present day. In so doing, Megalogenis divides the nation’s history into three self-explanatory sectors:

1.The Rise

2. The Fall

3. The Return.

From 1788 until the depression of the 1890s, Australia positioned itself to be open to the world in terms of ideas and people. Accordingly, it became the richest country on earth in terms of GDP per capita. However, following the 1890s depression, the country turned back in on itself. Australia excluded many immigrants and built a vast tariff wall to protect its industries. Inevitably, it slipped down the wealth totem pole. Australia’s return came with the end of World War II as it actively sought immigrants. This process has continued to the present day and has been complemented by the virtual removal of all import barriers. Once again, the country has soared up the wealth ladder.

I am providing here a brief synopsis of the Megalogenis argument. Of course, the book provides a host of data to support the contention that openness induces wealth. The one statistic that I enjoyed was that 28% of Australia’s population was born overseas. This rises to 39% in Sydney. By way of comparison, in the United States, always viewed as an immigration magnet, the comparable figure is only 13%. Australia has drawn a huge swathe of migrants while remaining a tolerant and prosperous society. There is much to be commended here.

Even to those backward looking people who believe in a little Australia, the book offers a thoughtful challenge. Highly recommended.

A Turkish Delight

What a very pleasant Turkish delight! As an aficionado of history, I am very demanding on historical details and was pleased to find this book full of solid facts which mixing well with the intriguing fiction.

It’s a stroke of genius to make Yashim a eunuch and a lala. This gave him an all-access pass to all sorts of places unavailable to other men or women and opened up the story to deeper levels and secret corners. The choice of the Polish ambassador, a diplomat without a country and without allegiance, as Yashim’s sidekick was another stroke of genius and added further scope to the story.

Unlike the West, eunuch had a long history in Asia and did not have the salacious negative connotation associated in the European mind. They wielded tremendous political power because they lived jowl in cheek, and in confidence, not only with the ruling families but also with the powerful elite. They were not all captives or kidnapped. Many men, seeking advancement, volunteered for the job. Some even became military leaders. Justinian sent his trusted eunuch Narses to lead the second Italian campaign and won great victories. The Chinese eunuch Zheng Her was the commander in successful campaigns against the Mongols. After he helped his prince usurp the throne to become the Chinese Emperor Yong Le, the trusted eunuch was appointed the leader of many major expeditions overseas. But, of course there were also many eunuchs who abused their position and misused their power, some even brought down empires.

The Ottoman Janissary system was not new. It was based on the successful Arabic Mamlouk system of levying children from rugged mountain regions known for fierce fighters. By removing them from their family and tribal alliance, the military corp became their new family and the sultan their only commitment. Like the Mamlouks, once they were allowed to marry and have family and became established and entrenched, they lost their edge. And when peace was the policy, they lost their purpose and became a problem. No wonder the reform-minded Mahmut II, who had a French mother, had to get rid of them.

It was very clever to hook the story onto the romantic legend of Aimee du Buc de Rivery, i.e. the Naksidil (Embroidered on the Heart) Sultan. It added another layer of history and intrigue to the complex situation in Turkey at that time.

Great historical information but otherwise disappointing

This book is well-worth reading for its historical accuracy, including interesting and unknown-to-me fascinating information about Istanbul in 1836. On the downside, there is too much unnecessary information that should have been edited out. There is a fine line between showing all of the author's research vs. using only the research that helps the narrative. The story line is complicated with 3 crime threads that need to be resolved. These threads are intertwined, and they are resolved in the final chapters. But before the reader gets to the resolution, there are too many unnecessary twists. The book could have been improved with a glossary of terms, a map, and a list of characters--these additions would have helped the reader a great deal. I'm pleased I read the book because I learned a lot of historical information, but I don't plan to read any more in this series.

I chose 4 stars because at certain points in the book I was a little confused by the story. However with that said, really enjoyed the book and would recommend to any one who loves intrigue,history and exotic locations. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series and learning about a time and place so foreign to me . This book is fun to read as well as intriguing.

100 years strong

I have several editions of this history book. Although no deep, dark rituals are revealed, it is useful how A Phi A, from its humble beginnings became the fraternal institution it is today.

Also, to supplement your reading, read Herman 'Skip' Mason's The Founding of Alpha.
