The first chapter of this book is designed to introduce you to the general concepts of LabVIEW through the development of a general program that acquires analog input data. The rest of the book introduces you to general concepts of data measurement and generation using LabVIEW s DAQ Assistants, Express VIs and the configuration approach for automatic data acquisition.
This primer has a unique modular structure that does not require the chapters to be completed in succession. After you complete the first chapter you are free to complete whichever sections you would like, in the order you would like to complete them, allowing you to focus on the topics that are of most interest to you.
Each section in the primer introduces you to a new data acquisition topic. After an introduction to the topic, a program is developed within this topic using step by step instructions. Each chapter concludes with several additional practical application problems, where the data acquisition program is given, but the detailed steps to create the program are left to you.
Example problems are provided for all modes of data acquisition, including analog input and output, digital input and output, and counters. For example, the problems show many aspects of analog input, such as hardware and software timing, buffered and triggered acquisition, and examples with common sensors, such as thermocouples and strain gages. Examples from other acquisition modes show how to drive many common output devices, such as stepper motors, servo motors, and DC motors, as well as software control programs, such as the PID compensator and pulse width modulation.

Valuable resource for learning LabView

This is a decent boot for learning LabView. As the title says, it is based on a previous edition of LabView which makes some of the screen shots a little different that the 2012 version. The basic lessons are of great value and if you are willing to look at the material being presented and not worry about the screens being slightly different due to the newer version, you will be able to learn quite a lot about using LabView. I found this book to be a very good value and I am using LabView 2012. If the screen shots had been for the 2012 version, I would have given it 5 stars.

Too much use of assistants

I bought the book with high hopes, after seeing the topics about continuous DAQ and buffers. However, what did not become clear to me from from the preview was that almost everything in the book is done using the assistants which Labview supplies. To detail the use of them is only partially helpful, as most problems with DAQ under Labview occur in cases, where the assistants can't be used, e.g. if values need to be updated, tasks modified etc.I would have expected significantly more considering the price point!

Best Beginner LabVIEW Book

I am a Mechanical Engineer and use LabVIEW everyday at work to automate testing for various engine/turbine components for my company's designs. In previous years I have read a lot of the LabVIEW books out there to try and gain more understanding of how the software works. Out of all of them, this is the one text that gave me straight forward topics and application without any 'fluff.' I learned so many key aspects of LabVIEW very quickly without having to skip pages to get to the meat of it all. It is true that (based on another commenter) the text is based on the DAQ Assistant, however if you are unfamiliar with LabVIEW the DAQ Assistant is the best way to start. Even though the book is based on LV 2010/11 you will still get the information you need if you are using 2012. This text was a real turning point for my understanding of LabVIEW and it is my best recommendation to friends and others who want to improve their beginner skills.
