About the Author

SCOTT O. LILIENFELD received his B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1986 to 1987. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany from 1990 to 1994 and now is Professor of Psychology at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and was the recipient of the 1998 David Shakow Award from Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology within Division 12. He is the founder and editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, Associate Editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine. He has authored or coauthored seven books and over 200 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Lilienfeld has also been a participant in Emory University’s “Great Teachers” lecturer series, as well as the Distinguished Speaker for the Psi Chi Honor Society at the American Psychological Association and numerous other national conventions.

 

STEVEN JAY LYNN received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. He completed an NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lafayette Clinic, Detroit, Michigan, in 1976 and is now Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he is the director of the Psychological Clinic. Dr. Lynn is a fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award of the State University of New York for Scholarship and Creative Activities. Dr. Lynn has authored or edited 19 books and more than 260 other publications, and was  recently named on a list of “Top Producers of Scholarly Publications in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Programs” (2000-2004/Stewart, Wu, & Roberts, 2007, Journal of Clinical Psychology). Dr. Lynn has served as the editor of a book series for the American Psychological Association, and he has served on 11 editorial boards, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Lynn’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

 

LAURA L. NAMY received her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993 and her doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at Northwestern University in 1998. She is now Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Faculty in Linguistics at Emory University. Dr. Namy is the editor of the Journal of Cognition and Development. At Emory, she is Director of the Emory Child Study Center and Associate Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, sound symbolism in natural language, and the role of comparison in conceptual development.

 

NANCY J. WOOLF received her B.S. in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialization is behavioral neuroscience, and her research spans the organization of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and consciousness. In 1990 she won the Colby Prize from the Sigma Kappa Foundation, awarded for her achievements in scientific research in Alzheimer disease. In 2002 she received the Academic Advancement Program Faculty Recognition Award. She also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department at UCLA in 2008. Dr. Woolf is currently on the editorial boards of Science and Consciousness Review  and  Journal of Nanoneuroscience.

Psychology Textbook: 2/5

I can't specifically recall any of these instances, but there's actually typos and grammatical mistakes in this textbook. Plural mistakes.
That, and more than once my instructor stopped to say "this is wrong," while reviewing it.

Let me emphasize this, I purchased Psychology: From Inquiry to Understanding for my intro to Psych course at my college. I can only speak for myself when I say this, but to me, mistakes in a college-level textbook are absolutely unacceptable. Especially considering they make new ones almost yearly for upwards of $100 each.

If buying textbooks wasn't directly correlated to succeeding in college, I would absolutely recommend nobody buy this.
In fact, the only redeemable thing about this is the price. $20 beats the heck out of the $100+ my local bookstore wanted for it.

Buyer Beware

Rented the book and received it in bad condition. No way to contact anyone about condition. Broken binder and wrinkled pages. Able to complete class, but when returned it was rejected for damage that was already there. Charged the account for full payment without prior notice ... thank God there was funds in the account to avoid an overdraft. Pictures were taken when received and no one to send them to for dispute. Buyer Beware ... not everything is as it should be when conducting online rentals or purchases.

I didn't realize that this was just a three-hole punched print out. I would have rathered the bound version, especially since the paper this is printed on is so fragile that it easily tears. I'm pretty gentle on books and this one is hard to keep in good shape. As for the content in this manual, it's phenomenal.

Admiral Lord Nelson, the most successful naval commander of all time, died on board his flagship HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Arguably the world's most famous ship, HMS Victory was never decommissioned by the Royal Navy and is now the world's longest serving warship.

Writing this review as someone who, primarily, conducts research into ships but also as one who builds model ships, this book is ideally suited for either purpose. Beginning with an explanation of "First Rate" ships and a list of all those which held that rating, author John McKay takes the reader briefly through a career summary of HMS Victory before moving on to her design and construction. From here on he leaves no stone unturned as he describes each and every facet of the ship - right down to how many tons of salt meat or biscuits she would carry.

Everything from her various repairs and refurbishments to the more specific aspects of her steering gear, ground tackle, pumps, boats, sheathing, accommodation, masts, rigging, yards, sails - and so the list goes on, is fully explained in excellent detail.

The equally excellent photography is only eclipsed by the ultra-high standard of technical drawings which cover every aspect of the ship.

One final point; This excellent series of books include a scale drawing of the vessel to which the book refers on the reverse side of the dust jacket. These are sometimes overlooked.

Altogether a "First Rate" book.

This text evolved from the content of a one semester introductory course in fu- tional analysis that I have taught a number of times since 1996 at the University of Virginia. My students have included ?rst and second year graduate students prep- ing for thesis work in analysis, algebra, or topology, graduate students in various departments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and several und- graduate mathematics or physics majors. After a ?rst draft of the manuscript was completed, it was also used for an independent reading course for several und- graduates preparing for graduate school.

Barbara D. MacCluer’s compact text, Elementary Functional Analysis, is an unusual book on a number of counts. For one, it unmistakably conveys the author’s abundant enthusiasm for her subject as well as her evident joy at presenting mathematics in general: it’s a rare thing that a GTM text is riddled with apposite quotes, anecdotes, and historical asides, all making for a wonderful personal touch and drawing the reader into dialogue with the author in an almost palpable way. It works quite well and makes for an enhanced experience of learning this beautiful but occasionally austere material in an almost informal setting. Talking about flesh and blood mathematicians goes a long way toward taking the edge off, so to speak, as this intrinsically exciting but dense material is presented more palatably by virtue of introducing this human element. It makes for very good reading.

Each of the six chapters of the book in introduced by a well-chosen quote, often hinting in a very useful manner at the material that is to follow. I particularly like MacCluer’s choice of Dunford and Schwartz to start off her third chapter: "In linear spaces with a suitable topology one encounters three far-reaching principles concerning continuous linear transformations…" We find out quickly that these "Big Three" (as the chapter is titled) are uniform boundedness, the open mapping theorem, and Hahn-Banach. MacCluer quickly goes on to cover these three gems in a most effective and elegant manner, as well as a number of their corollaries or, in her words, "close cousins," such as the closed graph theorem and Banach-Steinhaus.

And this brings me to the next count on which Elementary Functional Analysis is unusual: the density of gorgeous mathematics, presented elegantly and concisely, is truly remarkable, even if the text is meant only as an introduction to what the author herself calls a "huge field." Everything is proved completely, at a pretty high but not uncomfortable pace, and, as already indicated, the flow of material is excellent. What’s more, each chapter is followed by a long list of exercises that should afford the reader the opportunity to take it all to the next level, from absorbing the presentation (take notes, fill the margin of the book with comments, doodle… whatever floats your boat…) to doing battle on one’s own, so to speak (although some problems come equipped with hints).

So it is that in the span of about 200 pages, MacCluer takes the reader from Hilbert space preliminaries to Banach- and C*-algebras and, of course, the spectral theorem (introduced by a quote from Paul Halmos stressing that it all begins with Hermitian matrices). The book’s preface indicates that MacCluer’s intent is to present an effective introduction to the "huge field" of functional analysis, suitable for self-study, with modest preliminary requirements placed on the reader. She achieves her goal beautifully: Elementary Functional Analysis is a wonderful book.

This text is intended for a one-semester introductory course in functional analysis for graduate students and well-prepared advanced undergraduates in mathematics and related fields. It is also suitable for self-study, and could be used for an independent reading course for undergraduates preparing to start graduate school.

While this book is relatively short, the author has not sacrificed detail. Arguments are presented in full, and many examples are discussed, making the book ideal for the reader who may be learning the material on his or her own, without the benefit of a formal course or instructor. Each chapter concludes with an extensive collection of exercises.

The choice of topics presented represents not only the author's preferences, but also her desire to start with the basics and still travel a lively path through some significant parts of modern functional analysis. The text includes some historical commentary, reflecting the author's belief that some understanding of the historical context of the development of any field in mathematics both deepens and enlivens one's appreciation of the subject.

The prerequisites for this book include undergraduate courses in real analysis and linear algebra, and some acquaintance with the basic notions of point set topology. An Appendix provides an expository discussion of the more advanced real analysis prerequisites, which play a role primarily in later sections of the book.

Barbara MacCluer is Professor of Mathematics at University of Virginia.� She also co-authored a book with Carl Cowen, Composition Operators on Spaces of Analytic Functions (CRC 1995).

This is the most exact and concise reference available today

Paul Cooper has done an outstanding job of detailing the diverse world of explosives engineering. Included is sufficient detail to get a researcher new to a topic started and enough background to help an 'old timer' teach. The last five chapters on Engineering Applications is an unequalled summary of the use and analysis of the practice of explosives engineering. I use this book as my 'carry along' reference for both R&D testing and systems analysis of explosive devices.

For the neophytegrowing into an expert

If you are a novice to the field of explosives engineering, this text should be read after reading Paul Cooper's "Introduction to Explosives Technology." It is a cure to the 'I want more' feeling which that text produces. As in that text, it leaves one feeling 'why did I have so much trouble understanding this subject with other texts?'

The answer to that is Paul Cooper's knowledge of the subject, and ability to put that knowledge into words. One does not need a Ph.D. nor be a genius to understand this text. Having taught myself this subject, I wish Paul Cooper had written this work 40 years ago. It is designed to bring the novice up to the mid levels of knowledge in this field.

I have found myself putting the book down to write programs to model what I had just read. This text has brought me from believing I know explosive engineering, to having the confidence of actually knowing the subject.

"Explosives Engineering" is considerably more understandable than such biblical treatments such as LA-2000 or AMCP 706-180. This text prepares one for such texts at such a rarified level.

This text should be in the library of every explosive engineer. If I had to select three texts on the subject of explosives behavior, this would definitely be one of them. His "Intoduction to Explosives Technology" would be in the top 10 for preparing the groundwork into this field.

Not the best, but certainly not poorly written

Cooper moves from one subject to another in a manner that may annoy some. However, this is NOT a "teeny-bomber" book. If you have an interest in Thermochemistry and are familiar with some of the European methods of modeling, you may enjoy some of the more unique areas Cooper explores. The author leads you to this point by utilizing basic Thermodynamic concepts and this is why some readers may get bored. Although he does provide background if you actually read the text and don't skip about.
On the other hand; his models of Estimating Properties of Explosives (& Detonation Properties)is professional and a quick read. If you are familiar with the European presentations of the Rankine-Hugoniot Jump Equations this book will not appear Greek to you (pardon the pun). On a level most basic to the novice, Cooper's piece on Initiation & Initiators (detonators, etc) is well done, and easy for the novice to grasp. The book moves more toward explosive use in indusry and models, less so in terms of organic chemistry but there is enough nomenclature, basic structural formulas, history, and detonation theory to keep you reading as well as leading you forward to areas wherein you may not have a background. Undergraduate level stuff but quite useful for both the classroom as well as to explain world standards to those with a more focused background in explosive utility in a simple military context. This book attempts to be wide reaching and is useful for such a huge undertaking.

don't believe the hype

Sadly, the tile "Real Estate Loopholes" is a misnomer -- this book is fluff and little more. Just count the "stories" which are basically filler (something to beef up two or three true "loopholes," which, by the way, you'd be much better off reading about in the Ernst & Young tax guide 2003. Save your money...

Great Prep for a Meeting with Lawyer and Acct.

Some reviewers have mentioned the fact that this doesn't delve into specifics enough, and that all it does do is give you a list of questions to take with you to ask a real estate lawyer or an accountant. While this is true, I feel that is not necessarily a negative. No book should have pretend to have all the answers, especially when talking about real estate, where there are many variables that make each situation unique. So yes, it does not give you definite answers, but it is valuable as a preparation tool and as examples of possibilities.

A must read for new and experienced investors alike

As a seasoned investor, author and host of my own Real Estate Investment radio show, I read a lot of Real Estate related books and found this one to be top notch. While the answers to EVERY question are beyond the scope of any one book, the author covers just about every topic of concern to the RE investor. If you are new to the industry, you will come away with an understanding of what is involved and chapter 3 will especially help you focus and create a plan. If you are an experienced investor, you will be able to read this book on a whole different level and come away with tips and strategies on how to come away with more income and/or profit on every one of your investments.
