About the Author
SARA DESERAN is the co-owner of Tacolicious with her husband, Joe Hargrave, and the editor-at-large at San Francisco magazine. A longtime food writer and author of three previous cookbooks, Deseran lives with Hargrave and their kids in San Francisco.

JOE HARGRAVE has been working in Bay Area restaurants since the 1990s, first as the head of operations at Restaurant Lulu, Rose Pistola, Azie, and Frisson; then as the owner of Laïola, which he closed in 2009 to make way for Tacolicious. Chino, which opened in 2014, is his newest restaurant.

ANTELMO FARIA is the executive chef of Tacolicious, and MIKE BARROW is the restaurant’s beverage director.

Roasted tomato–mint salsa
Served with chips, this is the salsa that greets you when you sit down at Tacolicious. We make others, of course, but this is the one that seems to hit home with everyone. Although the ingredients are mostly expected, the uplifting note of fresh mint keeps diners guessing. The recipe was inspired by a chef whom Joe came of age with—Reed Hearon, one of San Francisco’s former greats who cooked at Restaurant LuLu and Cafe Marimba. In our house, Hearon’s cookbook, La Parrilla, is well worn and loved. Don’t just limit this salsa to chips. It also pairs wonderfully with Three-chile bistec adobado (page 110), Carnitas (page 124), and Achiote-rubbed grilled chicken (page 134).

Makes about 2-1/2 cups

6 small Roma tomatoes, halved lengthwise
1/2 large yellow onion, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick rounds
1 small jalapeño chile, stemmed
1/4 cup rice vinegar
1/4 cup packed chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons packed chopped fresh mint
1 tablespoon kosher salt

Position a rack on the top level of the oven, about 4 inches from the broiler. Turn on the broiler. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the tomato halves, cut side down; the onion slices; and the chile on the prepared baking sheet and broil for about 10 to 12 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and a bit charred. Let cool to room temperature.

In a food processor, combine the roasted vegetables and any juices from the pan with the vinegar, cilantro, mint, and salt and pulse until the mixture is almost, but not quite, smooth. If necessary, add up to 1/4 cup water to achieve a consistency similar to that of a thick soup.

Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary.

Serve now or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

We made 7 recipes and everything was delicious. We made Mama Virginia's Chile Verde Taco - delicious and a husband favorite; Frijoles Borrachos - sooo good!; Legendary Orange Sauce - a must do!; Roasted Tomato-Mint Salsa - different and refreshing; Cebollitas - they came out tough - won't make again to eat whole as they recommend - we chopped them to sprinkle on the tacos; Three-chile Bistec adobado taco w/cebollitas - I suggest using a fattier meat - flank steak was tough. I also suspect using a fattier cut (chuck maybe?) the wonderful chile paste would penetrate the meat better. We marinated over-night and there was not the expected flavor. AND let's not forget the Tacolicious Margaritas - Bueno! This book will not disappoint!!! A winner!

Great Recipes and Chile info

Very attractive book, has great pics and the recipes so far have been really good. I have made a couple of the salsas and tacos and all have been great. The Tamarind Habanero glaze was good both on ribs and chicken wings. I found it's also a great book to get introduced to using dried chiles, including common types of chiles. I am now stocked up so I can make most recipes in the book without having to hunt down the chiles first. Definitely worth the money in my opinion.

I suppose I am a bit biased given my obsession with the Tacolicious restaurants, but I found this cookbook to be extremely useful and easy to follow. It is very satisfying being able to make my favorite tacos and side dishes at home!

About the Author
Robert L. Rhodes, PhD, NCSP, is Chair of the Department of Special Education/Communication Disorders at New Mexico State University, as well as a school psychology faculty member. He has experience working in public schools, child and adolescent psychiatric facilities, and an international school setting. Dr. Rhodes has served as President of the New Mexico Association of School Psychologists and state delegate to the National Association of School Psychologists, and is an associate editor of School Psychology Quarterly. His research has focused on intervention strategies for culturally and linguistically diverse students and neuropsychological applications in the schools.

Salvador Hector Ochoa, PhD, is Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University, where he has a joint appointment in school psychology and special education. Dr. Ochoa serves on various editorial boards of school psychology and special education journals, and is an Associate Editor for the American Educational Research Journal: Teaching, Learning and Human Development. He is a recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award from the Texas A&M Center for Teaching Excellence and the Distinguished Achievement for Teaching Award from the Association of Former Students. His research focuses on bilingual assessment, social status, and educational programming issues of Hispanic children.

Samuel O. Ortiz, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology at St. John’s University in Queens, New York. Dr. Ortiz has served as a Visiting Professor and Research Fellow at Nagoya University, Japan, and is currently Vice President for Professional Affairs of American Psychological Association (APA) Division 16 (School Psychology). He was appointed to APA’s Committee on Psychological Testing and Assessment and has published widely on such topics as CHC Cross-Battery Assessment, intelligence testing, nondiscriminatory assessment, cultural and linguistic issues in psychology, and learning disabilities.�

The first few chapters are very dry...had to push through. But Chapter 4 and 5 are eorth the price of the entire book. These chapters provided a frame work to discuss and gather information a student's history.

Added to my frustration

I hoped to get the answers on how to assess kids from a diverse backgrounds and this book basically shows how each assessment out there does not meet the criteria for being sensitive to differences. The charts were very helpful though.

I Highly Recommend This Book

I attended a conference in Corpus Christi, Texas and had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Samuel Ortiz, and Dr. Hector Ochoa present on culturally and linguistically diverse students. I purchased the book when I returned home. It is an excellent resource that is clearly written, and has several tables and charts that can be adapted for use with school psychologists. I am coordinator of psychological services with a school district and this is a resource I rely on frequently. I highly recommend the text.

Bryson, Torran, Larkin, Zain and Aleric are all honorable men brought together by the Goddess. Their individual gifts, as well as their warrior strengths, complements each other. United in battle, they are a powerful force to be reckoned with, which their enemies can confirm.

Knight of Fire is the second book in the Terra Series. This is a well written, well paced engaging plot full of deceptions, secrets, prejudice and moments of sensual intimacy. The characters, both the men and their beloved pets, seem to come to life right before the reader’s eyes.

Torran is very much attracted to a Knight of the Crown Sir Karrick Brenton. Torran did not realize the attraction was mutual until Karrick came to Torran’s rescue during a spirit battle in the woods. Days later, a royal summons gave Torran and Karrick a chance to further develop a relationship while they all traveled to Dragon’s Landing. The trip to the capital is a twofold mission; find the killer of a gatekeeper in addition to seeking an audience with the Ancient One.

Although Torran and Karrick were the featured love interest in the storyline, all of the men engage in the battles as one unit of soldiers protecting each others back. Bryson is a powerful witch; he uses magic rather than a sword. Plus, his pet Wynn is a fire breathing dragon who takes exception to anyone who interrupts his romance novel reading time. Torran is a skilled archer; his pet is Rose, another fire breathing dragon fiercely protective of her dragon speaker. Though not as skilled as Karrick, the rest of the men are amazing warriors also.

S.J. Frost has created a brilliantly enthralling saga. The interaction between the characters is enormously hilarious, the mysteries are intriguing. The battle scenes are so forceful I found myself actually cheering out loud for the good guys. I highly recommend the thoroughly enjoyable Knight of Fire.

Sir Karrick Brenton and the Thirteenth Legion are sent to Forest’s End to investigate rumors of wrongdoing by Duke Bartell. They arrive to find that the Duke and his warlock’s evil had nearly destroyed the city before a handful of gifted men were able to bring him down. Introduced to the group Karrick is deeply intrigued by Dragon Speaker Torran. The gift of being a dragon speaker is extremely rare, indeed the royal family is one of the few who can claim to the skill.

No sooner do they bring down the enemy that Sir Karrick tells them they’ve been requested to journey to the capital, Dragon’s Landing by King Orrin. The King has great need of their skills, in particular a dragon speaker.

Though their journey will be swift Karrick begins romancing the shy dragon speaker. Likewise Torran is smitten with the muscular knight, yet they come from different worlds. Torran doubts they can share a future. It will be up to Karrick to prove their future is already written in the stars, together forever.

Knight of Fire is the perfect blend of exciting adventure, scorching passions, and a trail of mysteries to unearth. Author S.J. Frost pens a fresh style of age old romance in this entertaining tale of knights, dragons, and lovers. The pace is fast, yet everything unfolds in the proper time. Humans have forgotten the fact that it was dragons that agreed to share their lands with humans and not the other way around. Over the centuries, mankind has lost their knowledge and respect of the dragons that used to be their allies. Now in a kingdom where dragons are feared and Dragon slayers are welcome, only a few humans remain that have the ability to talk to dragons, every type of dragon. One such man is Torran. Torran is a Dragon Speaker, gifted with the rare ability to understand dragons. He has made it his life's work to rescue and keep safe every dragon that needs him. And in all that time, he has never met another like him.

Sir Karrick Brenton is a Knight of the Crown, On a mission to unseat a cruel Duke, Sir Karrick met the motley crew of Forest's End, already at the duchy in the middle of a battle. Once the evil duke and dark mage are slain, Sir Karrick remains behind with Torran, Garrett Evergard, Bryson Summers,and the rest of the group. Karrick has never met someone like Torran before. Both men are instantly attracted to each other but their lives are so very different. Karrick not only lives in the city of Dragon's Landing but has secrets that he has been keeping as well. Torran lives in Forest's End and is constantly traveling.

Torran is requested to come to the capital city of Dragon's Landing when the King needs an interpreter to speak with the Ancient One, a dragon of immense power whose appearance is needed to crown the king's successor. Bryson too is needed when the King's Gatekeeper goes missing. Once more the group of friends sets forth on a mission, only this time it includes a Knight of the Crown, Karrick Brenton. But unknown dangers await them all, and it will take all of their combined powers to defeat a common enemy and uncover the mystery of the missing Gatekeeper.

Knight of Fire picks up shortly after the events of To The Other Side and the destruction of the dark mage and corrupt duke. The group of friends, Bryson the Gatekeeper and mage, Garrett his lover, Torran the Dragon Speaker, Lark the minstrel, Zain the assassin and the elf, Aleric, are still cleaning up after the last battle with help from the newly introduced Sir Karrick Brenton, Knight of the Crown. After dispatching the Nightmare back to Hell (a great creation by S.J Frost), the men receive a missive from the King where he requests (demands) the presence of Torran in Dragon's Landing, the main city of the kingdom. Normally the group would use the gate to transport to Dragon's Landing but unfortunately, the King's Gatekeeper is missing and the Gate is locked. Only another Gatekeeper can access the abandoned gate and that means that Bryson and crew are coming too.

S.J. Frost keeps a lively pace as her narrative flows from the end of the first novel to the events that spark the next adventure for this ragtag group and the Knight of the Crown send by King Orrin to investigate the corrupt Duke Bartell and the dark mage in his employ. Even from the few scenes Torran and Karrick had together in To The Other Side, it was clear they were made for each other. Now in a traumatic opening chapter, Torran and Karrick are thrown back together when Karrick saves the Dragon Speaker's life. Frost's ability to create characters that connect immediately with each other as well as the reader shines here with Torran and Karrick. Torran is instantly lovable with his ability to speak to all sorts of dragons. Torran is subtly handsome and his small dragon companion, Rose, just adds to the picture of a man in tune with his gifts and the creatures he is meant to help. When Frost introduces Torran to Karrick,a knight at his most heroic, its clear that these men have much in common, not the least of which is their attraction to each other. Even though their friendship is newly established, we believe in them and the romance that is almost guaranteed to come.

To access the other Gate, the ragtag little group must travel on the Earth side to the missing Gatekeeper's cottage, and it is here that Frost's story takes a humorous turn. Modern plumbing and hot water are savored by all and the scene with Garrett and Bryson's companion dragon Wynn in the Earth bookstore is hilarious. I think that segments like this, where the characters return to the Earth side of a Gate , helps to reinforce the fantasy aspect and otherworldliness to be found on Terra. One short journey later and the gang reenter's Terra at the abandoned Gatekeeper's cottage. Frost returns to the darker story at hand with a poignancy that will resonate with all readers. Cara, the missing Gatekeeper functioned almost as a mother to Karrick, and the descriptions of his emotions and memories as they survey the empty rooms are as powerful as they are intimate.

The puzzle of the missing Gatekeeper is just one of the mysteries this group must solve. Frost introduces us to the Ancient One, a dragon of immense size and power who refuses to speak to the King. The reasons behind that refusal and the implications for the health of the kingdom will involve all the characters in a plot as full of deceit and treachery as it is of romance and love. For every lusty, sexy interlude there is sure to follow one full of magic and action. Frost knows how to whip up a battle filled with fighting knights and a slew of archers, fire breathing dragons of all sizes as well. There is a hatchling sure to capture your heart and a young scion in need of support and love. This is a fictional cauldron full of wonderful characters, action packed scenes and couples on the path to romance and their HEA. Truly there is something here for everyone to love.

S.J. Frost continues to build her vision of Terra and its history with each new story in the series. Knight of Fire adds new layers to its human/Dragon history and mythology as well as expanding on the characterizations of the people we have met and fallen in love with. With a world full of unicorns, elves, brownies, mages, and more, for me, the real stars here are the dragons. Tiny floral dragons that act like hummingbirds, white dragons that read bodice rippers, small ruby red dragons with feathers and a lady like sense of decorum, and immense dragons with the wisdom of the ages and everything in between. They are all here and talking to us. These dragons have the ability to fascinate even as they grab onto our sense of compassion for their plight. Dragons and dragon lore will always be popular and here with her Terra series, S.J. Frost has added a wonderful new chapter all her own.

I love this series. Knight of Fire is charming, fanciful, and a great romantic continuation of the story that started in To The Other Side. I think both books should be on your TBR list. If you are new to the series, start with To The Other Side to see where it all began. For those of you familiar to this great group of misfits and miraculous creatures, than you will be happy to see where the next adventure takes them in Knight of Fire. Has a place of honor on my reference shelf.

Many books on writing are strictly craft books. Some are about becoming "pro" - dealing with editors, managing your PR. This is not about that. WILD MIND is about practicing the art of writing and about the life of one writer, Natalie Goldberg. But is so clearly instructive, so vividly stimulating, that reading it will automatically boost your own creative fires, and very likely your output. So...in its way, it is a surprisingly practical book.
Like her earlier WRITING DOWN THE BONES, Goldberg has created another wonderful resource for the writer at any stage of his/her craft. She's evolved, refined and developed the exercises presented in Bones, as well as added new ideas. A favorite of mine is to read work aloud often. She writes: "Write, read,write, read. You become less attached to whether it is good or bad. 'I wrote this now I'll read it, no big deal.' " She gives guidelines for working in a writer's group, and has many "try this" suggestions sandwiched in between anecdotal moments from her life which enrich and strengthen us.
As a professional writer for 25 years, I personally learned from this book mid career and continue to revisit eleven years later. A must have for any writer.

A Writing Classic

Natalie Goldberg's insights about writing as a spirtual practice are just as valid today as they were in 1986 when this book was first published. Her suggestions to writers work, both for beginning writers and for writers who depend on words in order to make a living. I recommend this book to the emerging writers I mentor as a must-have reference second only to a good dictionary.
As a professional writer who has written over 20 books and 500 magazine articles, I've given Writing Down the Bones away several times after mistakenly deciding that I'd outgrown it. Just as often I've had to go out and buy another copy to remind myself that there's more to the writing life than rejections, and royalties. Every time I reread it, I find something new. Last year I read Goldberg's memoir, Long Quiet Highway: Waking Up in America, which provides insights about how she came to her beliefs about writing and spirituality. I suggest reading both books.

So Good I Couldn't Put It Down

When I took a creative writing course a few years ago, Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones" was a required text. It was so good I couldn't put it down.
Natalie points out that all beginning writers are controlled by their "inner censor" and therefore write what they think other people want to hear, or they put a false face on their writing. Natalie does indeed "free the writer within," by giving us permission to "just write sh--" (her words,not mine). The gist of the book is this: just write. Go for volume, not quality. The quality will come as you gain experience and lose your inhibitions. Natalie says everything you write, not just the good stuff but the bad as well, creates a "compost heap of the mind." It stays in your subconscious and mellows and ripens, ready to fertilize your skills and imagination for future writing projects. I actually put Natalie's suggestions into practice and kept a writer's journal for several years (and still do), and wrote thousands of words. I feel that my writing skills did indeed improve and even shine.
Natalie also discusses some things to try, like writing in different places, and discusses useful topics like metaphor and simile. Her book is not a technical manual, but rather an easy read, a personal insight into the joy and freedom from uninhibited writing. I always recommend this book first to anyone who expresses an interest in learning to write.

I have enjoyed reading this book. It is written and published in the UK so a lot of the research and organizations cited are from across the pond, but I did enjoy the information and still find it valid here in the US. It has a lot of good information for parents that are looking to feed their kids following healthy guidelines while trying to avoid so much of the processed junk our supermarkets sell here in the US. Easy read as well.

An Amazon Best Book of July 2016: If you think you know the back-story of the founding of Facebook because you saw The Social Network, think again: Antonio Garcia Martinez’s Chaos Monkeys tells a more complete and sometimes darker story about the founding and development of Mark Zuckerberg’s multi-billion-dollar invention. This is not a whodunit (we know who did – Zuckerberg, those rowing twins, and assorted Harvard frenemies) so much as a procedural, a chronicle by the data-guru who was eventually forced out of Facebook (he went to Twitter) – but not before gathering some pretty interesting social data of his own: about Zuckerberg, about other Silicon valley “chaos monkeys,” and about the culture that spawned all of them. Others who have toiled in tech will recognize some universal truths: for example, that despite the great wealth, most are not in it for the money so much as the mission; Facebook, Garcia Martinez asserts, was a “church of a new religion,” its practitioners true believers. Amazingly accurate coverage of Facebook's internal culture, the good, the bad, and the ugly. (Plus much, much more!)

I worked at Facebook from 2010 until 2015, and until now I have never seen the inner machinations as accurately portrayed as they are in 'Chaos Monkeys'. Facebook very carefully maintains a public relations campaign (almost more internally focused than external) to convince the world it is the best place to work… ever. In reality it is just like any other large company, with plenty of political intrigue, infighting, silo-building, and collateral damage. Sure, the mini-kitchens have organic bananas, and pistachios that stressed slobby software engineers neither have to shell, nor leave a pile of shells littered all around the floor... but in reality they are shackled to an oar, pulling to the endless beat of a drum. Code. Code. Code. It is all here… the creepy propaganda, the failed high-profile projects, the surreal manager/staff relationships, the cultivated cult-like atmosphere, the sharp divide between the have-it-all, and the "hope to have enough to escape" staff. The bizarro world of inside FB, around the IPO. I was there and experienced many of the same corporate events and milestones myself. Antonio Garcia Martinez captures it all perfectly.

That's only the last half of the book.

The rest is a tale of escaping from startup hell, making a go at reaching startup heaven, then making deals to salvage it all when reaching the critical trial-by-fire that every startup must face: die, execute flawlessly, or exit.

There are some who will find the tone, the voice, or the political incorrectness of both to be too harsh to digest. I've already seen that in a few of the reviews here. To them I say "grow up"... put on your big boy/girl pants and read this for the story. The tale it tells. The facts it presents. The data with which it backs it all up. Because it is all true. The exposition of complex systems are described using appropriate, and facile metaphors. Many of the standard Facebook tropes ("stealing/selling your data", "Zuck is evil", etc.) are explained for the misleading baloney that they are. Best of all it describes how the advertising media really operates, going back to the dawn of it, and how Facebook, Google, et al are merely extensions of a system that has existed for two centuries. It is worth the purchase price for that lesson alone, all wrapped in a great, and true story.

For myself, having lived through much of the same experience at Facebook (from onboarding, the devotion, the cynicism, to the inglorious, frustrated exit bungled by one of the legion of Facebook's incompetent and narcissistic manager corps) I found myself going from laughter, to nodding agreement, to gut-wrenching bouts of PTSD as I turned the pages of 'Chaos Monkeys'. Now I no longer have to justify myself to people who ask me why I left Facebook - I can just tell them to read this book, since it explains it better than I ever could.

Insightful, hilarious and accurate take on the insanity of silicon valley

Chaos Monkeys is a bargain, since you are really getting four books in one. First, our lucky reader is treated to a Sherman-style total war on the vanities and conceits of the tech elite. For the hater in all of us, it is uncompromised, savage delight. He particularly takes aim at noxious myth of meritocracy in the valley. As anywhere, those educated at the right places, and taught the right diction and manner of speaking rise to the top. For whatever reason, people in silicon valley seem to need reminding of this fairly often, perhaps more than most.

Another skewered vanity is that the work being done there is “changing the world.” The nirvana of being paid millions while doing meaningful work is the final privilege being sought by the waves of wall street refugees making their way out west. Only the most self-deluded really buy it, and as Antonio shows, those often happen to be working at the most influential and powerful companies. Is Facebook really changing the world? Without question, but when Facebook uses the language of historical figures, implicitly placing itself on the same podium as Cato the elder, say, it is both creepy and pathetic. Furthermore, the same gulf between the windfalls of the upper echelon and the rank-and-file is still present.

The second book is a detailed, unsparing deep-dive into the trenches of the ad tech industry. Just for that, it is worth reading if your job has any remote connection with selling online. You will come away with more awareness of how pixels convert to dollars. This theme occupies most of the second half of the book. If anything, the vivid metaphors he uses to describe the otherwise dull and esoteric details of identity matching and attribution will serve you well anytime you must summon a complete picture of this complex web in your head. Even non-specialists will find fascinating the descriptions of how private data is collected and sold, not to mention probably realizing they have been worried about the wrong kind of privacy violations.

Third, there is a marvelous how-to guide for aspiring entrepreneurs hidden between the diatribes. Antonio managed to meet many of the key players in the industry. His detailed accounts of many of these meetings (confrontations) offer a unique behind-the-scenes vantage which many manuals for silicon valley success avoid, so the authors can remain in good stead with the figures involved. In addition, there is another way that Chaos Monkeys serves as an excellent preview of what entrepreneurship entails. Other how-to books are so smitten with the idea of entrepreneur as Hero that they often fail to convey the tedium, anxiety and chaos that are most of the day-to-day realities for any entrepreneur. These other books mention that building a company is hard and stressful, but often seem shy to mention exactly why, beyond executing a bad idea, or a linear increase in working hours. In reality, the unspoken “hard” part of any startup is not the actual hours involved, or the idea, or execution, but rather the unwavering conviction you must have to keep at it when things are totally falling apart. The struggle to convince yourself, your investors and your customers that your vision of the world is the correct one is constant war against entropy, counterfactuals, competitors or self-doubts. Any of these must be swallowed, digested, shat out, and freeze-dried as more grist for your sales pitch mill. Every entrepreneur will immediately recognize what Antonio unabashedly portrays: the dreadful gulf between the inward awareness of all the chaos and flux at the startup, while preserving the outward image of polish, order and optimism. In fact, the delusion of performing world-changing work as an entrepreneur (even when you’re just building a s***ty analytics panel) is so pervasive, it cannot be solely attributed to narcissism. The book makes the point that this delusion is actually an emotional coping mechanism to endure the aforementioned doublethink on a daily basis.

Finally, we are given an intimate, unsentimental portrait of Antonio’s tortured psyche. While I wouldn’t necessarily advocate “praying for Antonio’s soul,” as a previous reviewer stated, his relentless self-deprecation and raw honesty balance out some of the selfish decisions he makes in the book. He is extremely well read, and I suspect this background informs a somewhat tragic theme of the book— for a certain type of person, the only hope that can lift the cynicism and misanthropy of early life disappointment is to undergo a meaningful quest with loyal companions. There aren’t many of those quests around anymore, unfortunately, nor is there a surfeit of loyal companions in the sort of places and professions that demand one’s full faculties. In the book, many characters and causes fail to meet this high bar, of course. I suspect more than a few failed idealists will find a kindred spirit in Antonio, despite the caustic tone throughout. That said, there is plenty here to be offended about, if that is your sort of thing. Some of the criticism is justified. For example, there is some objectification of women that could have been omitted. However, if that is your ONLY take-away, then you are precisely the sort of self-important, thin-skinned windbag that is rightfully skewered in Chaos Monkeys.

If you are remotely interested in startups and tech you should read this book. This is Liar's Poker crossed with Silicon Valley, with a smattering of Hunter S. Thompson-esque ruminations about life, capitalism, and everything.

You will either love or hate Martinez's voice (I found myself doing both at different parts of the book). I'm sure a lot of people are going to get hung up on some offhand sexist comments or the dirt thrown at Facebook's execs (and I'm sure that Martinez could have avoided both while keeping the book interesting). The real gems in the book, however, are the tangents that Martinez takes to describe in a really simple way some fairly technical concepts. For example the way that he describes online advertising and why it is similar to security trading is really well done.

Read this book if you want to see how the Valley works from someone who was in there, drank the koolaid, but have the clarity of mind to get out of there and write about it.

She sings in her church choir and is active in monthly spiritual groups. Most importantly, she makes time every day to sit still with God. Linda lives on her own again with her cat, Abbakadabra, in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Great for Kids AND Adults

This was a very interesting book, and I enjoyed it as much as my five-year-old son (and I learned as much as he did, too). In fact, my 11-year-old daughter was compelled to join in the reading, too. The book's Q&A, second-person format makes the reader feel involved, and the author answers questions that cover basic Hopi beliefs and culture, as well as things that children really want to know: "What games would I play?"

The Interest of Living with the Hopi

This is a great book. It has a lot of facts in it. The illustrations and the text made it seem like you were there, and you really feel how you would live and work. They had to do a lot of work, even the children. Children collected firewood, beans, plants, and other things to help with the gardens and food. In Hopi culture, the boys and the girls were equal. They had different jobs, but neither were more important than the other. The Hopi also looked for baby eagles hundreds of feet off the ground to see if they're prayers would be answered. I would recommend this book to kids and grown ups who are interested in Hopi and in our country.

excellent synposis of the hopi indians

obviously it's quite difficult to boil down an entire tribe into an accessible children's book, but the author has done a wonderful job of doing so. i purchased this book for my 2nd grade son's project on his choice of native american tribe, and was please to see it provided a fairly detailed account of what it was like to be a hopi indian while using simple language that was easy to understand.

my other son chose the cherokee indian tribe, and i was surprised to see that his book did not provide a focused view of tribal living. that book tried to cover the vast history of the cherokees (including trail of tears) but didn't offer enough details into their day-to-day living like this one.
